The sound of breaking glass stopped Kate Flynn from her deep and concentrated reading. She very rarely read, in fact, Kate had never really been interested in any kind of reading object before! But, there was something about this book that intrigued her.

“KATE!” The distinctive shout of her slightly tired Mum bounced down the stairs into the living room where Kate was sitting. She slammed it shut and pushed it to one side, not believing that she had just read a chapter of an ACTUAL book! Flicking her radiant blood red hair over her shoulders, Kate stood up and to her dismay her Mum had gone and broken another window. A double glazed window. This wasn’t like her at all. Kate’s Mother did look a bit upset so Kate kept her mouth shut. She had a reputation of being out spoken. This was the second time this week she had broken a window. Something was wrong and it wasn’t something to be ignored. Kate wasn’t the lazy type she had a fiery soul seeking for adventure and this problem seeked it VERY badly.

The wind whipped the scarlet hairs of Kate as she stood on the sea front. She has never experienced the feeling of being scared… or that lump you get in your throat when you’re… worried. Kate had found out a bit more information about her Mum’s weirdness and it wasn’t good. She clenched her silver necklace as it lifted slightly off her pale neck due to the blowing wind. This was the one and only true memory of her family. Her family, that is, a chubby hamster and her Mother. Her ill mother that was in hospital. What was she to do? Although she was 18 and feisty there was always a place for a loved one in her heart. That space was empty.  Kate’s eyes drooped and she lifted her head up high; breathing the salty air into her lungs. She decided to walk alone and she better get used to it, because the minutes of her Mother’s life were dwindling in the single digits now…
