"You can ask, you know."

"...Pardon?"

Vincenzo lifted his gaze from the document that he had been studying to meet the gaze of his personal assistant through the rear-view mirror. "You've been sneaking glances at me ever since I got in the car. Clearly there's something that you want to ask me, so go aheadget it over with and then focus on the road before we end up in an accident."

The Italian man sitting behind the wheel immediately turned his gaze back to the road and remained silent for a moment longer before finally mustering up the courage to speak. "How are you feeling today, sir?"

Slightly confused by the question, Vincenzo's brows furrowed as he answered, "Fine. Why do you ask?"

"Well...yesterday you set out to simply sign a peace treaty and yet returned home a married man," came the driver's careful response. "I was just wondering about how you were dealing with that."

Vincenzo turned his gaze to the view outside of the window. "I did what I had to do for the sake of our family. The Rivera-Cassano feud has been going on for far too long and has hurt too many people. I was given the opportunity to end it yesterday, so I did." He paused for a moment before quietly adding, "Besides, I couldn't exactly say no."

A nod came from the driver. "Do you think that it will work out? Will the feud really end just like that?"

"I don't know. We'll just have to wait and see, I suppose."

"And if it doesn't end?" The curious driver's gaze shifted back to the consigliere's reflection in rear-view mirror. "What happens then?"

"We fight. Just as we have been all this time up until now."

"And your wife? What will you do about her?"

Vincenzo's sharp gaze turned back to the rear-view mirror while the driver quickly focused on the road ahead once again. "She is my wife only on paper. If she or her family betray the treaty and start the war all over again, I will not hesitate to strike them down. All of them. Does that answer you question?"

"Yes, sir."

"Good. Now focus on the road, Luca."

"Of course, sir."
