You were walking through the rose garden outside heartslabyul when you heard a noise. It sounded like... sniffling? Looking around for the source, you rounded a corner to see none other than Riddle Rosehearts himself, curled up in a ball on the ground. His back was against the leaves of the roses, arms wrapped around his knees.

"Riddle...?" you questioned hesitantly, concern seeping through your voice.

His puffy red eyes met yours, tears rolling down his face. There was a flash of panic in his features as he quickly wiped the water away.

"Ah, prefect y/n..? Can I help you?" Riddle asked.

"No, no, I- are you okay?" You walked closer towards him, crouching down to be at his level. When you tried to read his eyes, you could see that they were hazy, as if he was numb.

     "I'm fine. I'm a housewarden, I can handle myself. "

"I know you can. But you know I'm here for you too, right..? You don't have to struggle with things alone," you pressed, sitting down in front of him.

He shot an icy glare at you, and although normally you would've been running for the hills, his tearstained eyes just made you want to help more. Seeing that you weren't budging, he dragged his eyes back down to the grass.

Tentatively, you reached towards him, resting your hand on his. He flinched, but didn't pull away.

"You can talk to me," you coaxed, giving his hand a gentle squeeze.

Meeting his eyes, you could see the battle going on in his head. Could he really trust you? Would you laugh at him if he told you what was going on? Maybe you could help. Suddenly he broke down, wrapping his arms around you and crying into your shoulder.

Riddle's hands squeezed your shirt desperately, as if he was clinging on for dear life. Violent shudders wracked his body as tears soaked your shoulder. You held on to him tightly, trying to reassure him in any way you could.

"Hey, hey- it's okay. You're okay, you're safe, I'm here."

After what must have been several minutes, he pulled his head back slightly, red hair falling across his face and sticking to his cheeks. His hands still clung tightly to your back.

"I'm- I got a B in my alchemy final. I don't know how- I studied and studied, I knew it so well. I don't understand what happened. But I- tomorrow," he paused, clearly fighting off another wave of tears.

"Oh. It's winter break," you said in almost a whisper, realization washing over you. He had to go home tomorrow. It had been awhile since he had gone overblot, but you distinctly remember him mentioning how bad his mother is; she likely hadn't changed.

Riddle nodded solemnly. "I'm going to have to explain myself. But I can't. I tried, y/n! I Tried so hard, but I'll never be good enough, even with all my other scores. She's going to trap me there, I know it. I can't- I can't go through that again," his shoulders and chest were fighting to stay stable, tears running down his face.

You wrapped your arms around him tighter, feeling him sob.

"I can't say I understand fully, but my family has been awful as well. I think... you want to run, right? You don't want to feel that numbness again, that fear. It's... not your fault. Maybe you can stay with me over break? I couldn't go home even if I wanted to," you chuckled, trying slightly to lighten the mood.

He sniffed, loosening his grip on you just a bit. "I don't think I can. She would kill me- unless I told her that I was staying for extracurricular. Which, I should probably do anyway," Riddle trailed off in thought. You frowned slightly at the last comment, sliding your fingers down his arm to grasp his hand.

"You can study, but you also need to take a break. You've been pushing your limits ever since you were born, Riddle. And I... I don't want to see you in pain like this. Please, just balance it out a little, at least?"

Riddle glanced down at your intertwined hands. Tightening them, he dragged his eyes back up to meet yours, with a strained smile.

"Okay. I... I'll try. For you."

"That's all I ask for," you smiled, bringing your forehead to his, and leaning against him.

The birds in the garden chirped happily, and everything seemed a little brighter. They would work this out- you knew it. And both of you would be alright.
