My mind is flourishing of ideas, combinations on what I should do. Time's running out.
"Cassidy, your turn." I hear Logan announce as he devours his chocolate vanilla swirl thingy.
This is it. My arms tingle as I walk to the counter.
"What will it be miss?" The man asks.
"Um...umm..." I got it. "Can I get the Strawberry shortcake?" I say pointing to the picture on the truck.
"Sure." The man goes back into the freezer.
I breath out.
"See it wasn't that bad." Logan says to somewhat calm me down.
This is the first ice cream truck I've ever been to since my parents died. Logan had asked Lola, the management lady if she could find a way to get an ice cream truck so I could face my fears.
"Here you go miss," I see the man hand me the ice cream bar.
Looking down for a few seconds at the wonder, Logan pulls me away.
I forgot people were in line.
"What do I do now?" I look up at the boy staring at me confused.
"You open the wrapper..." Logan says in an accent he uses to talk to little kids.
"Stahp." I stop him in his tracks. Playfully pushing him and laughing, we sit on the curb and watch the cars as they pass by.
"It's almost curfew, we should head back." Logan says while taking the last bite of his popsicle.
"Do we have to?" I whine laying my head on his shoulder.
It's so nice to have someone who cares about you. Logan's been here for me for as long as I can remember at this hell hole.
One time, we had this idea a few years ago to sneak out of our units late at night and sneak up on the roof to watch the stars.
We accidentally fell asleep, but luckily we woke up just in time to tippy toe back to our rooms.
"I think we do, unfortunately." He simply replies with such a caring tone.
"Oh yea...it's adoption day..."
We get up and walk back to the 'prison'.
After a million bajillion years we finally make our way to the home.
As we walk in, Lola's there braiding Reyna's hair.
Reyna is one of the little girls from the 6-8 division.
"Hey Reyna!" I say bending over to get at her level.
(A/N:I know,savage right🔥✖️🙏🏼)
"Hi Cassidy. Listen, I know how much you want to get on my level, but sorry gurrrrl," she says waving her finger in the air. "you will never be able to get down to my level. humph"
Woah there.
"REYNA." Lola snaps.
"Um ok...hi, Lola." Struggling to bring up even the slightest wave because if I were her I would want to wave back but she has no available hands so I don't know if I should because i could make it really awkward and-
"Hi. Cassy...WAIT. What are you guys doing here, you're should be back in your quarters getting ready for tomorrow!" Lola looks over to the empty work bin.
"It's not like we're gonna get adopted."
"WHA-" Logan then interrupts Lola.
"Look, we all know people or couples now and days go for the babies and kids...so no reason to get hopeful. We've been here for over 6 years, and we've been through about 100 adoption days. We're not getting adopted."
Lola looks at us with a frown.
"There's always a possibility. Never loose hope."
There it is. The little pep talks she gives us.
"Sure Lola," I say very cocky. "Well, you heard her, time for bed." I say sneaking in a sly smirk at Logan before we laugh and walk back towards our 'cells'.
My heart skips a beat as I trip over a pebble lying across my bedroom floor making my toe fly into the base of the bed.
"Fuck!"
"FUDGE." I quickly say to cover my tracks.
"What was that i just heard?!" I can hear Lola yell.
"Nothing. What? What's happening. Are you talking to me? Sorry, didn't hear anything. Maybe it was Yeraldy or Jessica. Certainly not me."
Damn it. why must I be so socially awkward.
"Hmm. That's what I thought."
Phew.
