Jin sat huddled on the floor of Jungkook's opulent room, the cold seeping through the thin mat. The silence of the night was broken only by the frantic beating of his own heart, a drumbeat of fear and pain.
Suddenly, a searing pain ripped through his stomach, followed by a violent wave of nausea. He scrambled towards the toilet, his body convulsing as he emptied his stomach into the porcelain bowl. A choked sob escaped his lips as he saw the horrifying sight – blood, thick and dark, swirling in the pan. He vomited again, more blood expelled from his weakening body. A chilling certainty washed over him: his time was running out. His health was deteriorating rapidly; the brief respite the medication had offered was gone.
Exhausted, he leaned against the cool tiles, his gaze drifting towards Jungkook, who lay peacefully asleep on the large bed. Jungkook, will you miss me when I am gone? The question echoed in the silence, unanswered. Tears streamed down his face, a silent lament for a life unlived, a love unspoken. He didn't want to die. He had a chance, a sliver of hope for survival, but the insurmountable barrier of money stood in his way. Who would believe that he, Jungkook's husband, had died due to a lack of treatment? He couldn't burden his uncle with this, a man who struggled to make ends meet. With a heavy heart, Jin dragged himself back to his mat, sleep offering a temporary oblivion.
The next morning, Jungkook noticed the unsettling crimson stain in the toilet bowl during his morning routine. Jin uses this toilet too... could something be wrong with him? He had observed Jin’s declining health, the increasing gauntness of his frame, but had dismissed it as a consequence of his perceived stubbornness.
During breakfast, Jin silently served Jungkook his meal. The opportunity to ask about the blood in the toilet slipped away amidst the tense silence that permeated their interactions.
"Jungkook," his mother announced, her voice sharp, "my friend's daughter, Sin, is coming today. I want you to accompany her, as I don't want her to feel bored."
The mention of Sin, his childhood friend, sparked a flicker of excitement within Jungkook. They had been inseparable before her family moved abroad.
Later, Jungkook saw Jin sitting on the floor, meticulously folding his few belongings and placing them neatly under the bed, the only space allotted to him.
"I think I should divorce you," Jungkook blurted out, the words sharper than intended. "Actually, I liked Sin since childhood but never could tell her..." He wanted to gauge Jin's reaction, to see if he would finally show some emotion, some jealousy.
Jin stood up slowly, using the bed for support, his movements weak and unsteady. "Why are you telling me that? Do whatever you want. In my whole life, no one has ever valued my opinion. I am like a puppet to everyone. And I know Mother-in-law wants you to marry her friend's daughter. She told me I don't deserve to be your husband." Jin’s voice was barely a whisper, his eyes filled with a weary resignation.
He took a tentative step towards Jungkook. "Jungkookie..." The unexpected use of the childhood nickname caught Jungkook off guard. "Can you please give me your love for one night? I will be gone after that... I will never ask for anything from you again..."
Did he take that seriously? Jungkook thought, a pang of guilt twisting in his gut. He had intended to make Jin jealous, but Jin’s words were filled with a heartbreaking finality. I am not going to divorce him or marry Sin. I was just playing... but...
"You can divorce after that," Jungkook said, his voice surprisingly flat. "I don't have any objection."
"Why would you have any objection?" Jin replied, a bitter smile touching his lips. "You will be free to go to your boyfriend after all, you whore..."
"I don't know where you conjured up this boyfriend, but I will not offer any explanation. I know you wouldn't believe me anyway." Jin turned away, his frail body shaking.
Their first and last act of intimacy was a bittersweet symphony of longing and unspoken farewells. For Jin, it was a cherished memory to hold onto in the face of oblivion. If I had a chance, I wouldn't leave. One glimpse of his face would be enough to live the rest of my life, however short. But destiny has other plans. He knew he couldn't bear to die in this cold, unwelcoming house. He would go back to his village, to the familiar comfort of his mother's grave. Early the next morning, Jin left without a word, a silent goodbye to a life that could have been.
Two days passed, and Jungkook hadn't seen Jin. After their night together, Jin was simply gone. He didn't have his uncle's number, and Jin didn't own a phone, leaving Jungkook with no way to contact him. A growing unease settled in his stomach.
As he sat at his desk, a pen slipped from his fingers and rolled under the bed. He bent down to retrieve it and his hand brushed against a white envelope. Seokjin’s name was written on it. His heart pounded in his chest as he hurriedly opened it, his hands trembling. He wasn't ready for what he found. The stark words "Brain Tumour with hemangioma" stared back at him from the medical report. Tears welled in his eyes, blurring the devastating diagnosis. Was he going to lose Jin before he could even acknowledge his true feelings?
Driven by a desperate urgency, Jungkook drove to Jin's village. He found Jin's uncle sitting on the porch, his face etched with grief.
"What are you doing here after making Jin's life hell?" the uncle asked, his voice filled with bitterness.
"Where is Jin?" Jungkook pleaded, his voice cracking.
Jimin emerged from the small house, his eyes red and swollen. He gently took Jungkook's hand and led him towards the village cemetery.
"Here is your Jin," Jimin said softly, pointing to a freshly dug grave, "sleeping with your child inside his womb..."
"No... no, it can't be!" Jungkook shouted, his voice raw with anguish, and ran towards the newly made grave, his world collapsing around him.
