Started off as a good thing, a sure thing, you held back but I know

"Why do you always order 3 dumplings for yourself?"
"Because 2 is too little while 4 is too much!"

First
Pran had never had dumplings before, until he was 9.
When he first heard of the word "dumplings", he thought it was some type of candy, probably something similar to gummy bears.
Dissaya didn't allow him to have too many sweets, that must be the reason why he had never had dumplings before.
It wasn't until he heard Pat mentioning that their family had dumplings for dinner one day.
Who eats sweets for dinner?
Pran sneaked a look at Pat with his innocent eyes, hoping that Pat would tell him what exactly a dumpling was.
"My father said eating dumplings together as a family is a symbol of family union, that's why he decided to teach Pa and me how to make dumplings for ourselves over the weekend."
Pran's mother usually cooks Thai food at home, and Pat suddenly realised that maybe, dumplings weren't an exclusively Thai thing.
That was why he didn't have dumplings before.
Pran's mouth watered instinctively as he continued to eavesdrop on Pat's conversation with his friend.
He wished he could have a taste of dumplings, but he was never allowed to visit his neighbours.
And he didn't think it was a good idea if he told his mother that he wanted to eat dumplings because Pat said they were good.
He would've gotten an earful from his mother.
Instead, he swept his little wish under the carpet, hoping that one day, he would be able to have dumplings.
///
That day came by an accident, when Pran informed his mother that he needed to pay for an exercise book that was required for his Science class.
Dissaya pulled out some notes from her wallet and told Pran that he could keep the change for himself.
It was a reward for Pran because he scored 1 mark higher than Pat for his last English quiz.
Pran's eyes widened in excitement, he planned to spend the money on some dumplings from the Chinese eatery on his way back home after school later.
When class was dismissed, Pran skipped to the place and peeked through the windowpane, looking at the menu attentively.
20 bahts for one serving of dumplings.
Pran looked down at his opened palms, frowning as he counted the money he had.
"5, 1, 1, 1..."
18 bahts.
Pran was short of 2 bahts, his little shoulders slumped.
It had been months, he wished he had 2 more bahts. He craved to have dumplings.
Now, he would need to suppress his greedy wish again.
"Hello, you looked a little sad here darling. How can I help you?"
Pran lifted his face and saw a plump woman crouching in front of him. She wore an apron with the eatery logo printed on it and she was smiling at Pran warmly.
