The Carnival

May 24th, 1968

It was Angeline's favourite time of year, the sun was beaming down on her as she sat out in her garden, a calm breeze gently blowing her baby hairs out of place. She enjoyed moments like this, relaxing all by herself, the only sounds being her tiny breaths and the chirping of birds. The angel pranced over to the small strawberry field her mother had growing in her yard.

"S'lovely," she whispered to herself, "Jus' a few more weeks and they'll be perfect to eat."

Angeline had been pestering her mother to grow strawberries in their garden for quite a long time, so she was ecstatic when her mother finally gave in and planted a small strawberry field for her little angel. As Angeline went to sit under a tree to take a break from the strong rays of sunshine she was startled by the shrill calls coming from her best friend, Elizabeth Clifton.

"Angie! Angie! Angie!" She heard Elizabeth shout as she was pulled into a bone-crushing hug. She wasn't too fond of the nickname given to her by her close friend, she just preferred to be called by her full name. She tensed and pinched her eyes shut as she was grabbed by both arms and shook aggressively. "Angie! You're not gonna believe me when I tell ya this!" she squealed whilst jumping up and down.

"Calm down Elizabeth," Angeline spoke to her friend softly, "what is goin' on with you?"

"Freddie invited me to the carnival this evenin' and he said I could bring a friend! Oh my, what will I wear? What will you wear? Do ya know how long I've fancied him? Since we were children Angie! Don't you remember? Isn't this just unbelievable?" she rambled on to her friend with the brightest smile on her face.

"Yes, Elizabeth of course I remember! His name never left ya mouth all throughout high school," the doll rolled her eyes playfully. Angeline was not too fond of the boy but was supportive of her friend nonetheless. "That's far out, I'm sure you two will have a fabulous time," she grinned up at her friend.

"Were ya even listening silly? You're comin' with!"

"Oh my, I don't think that's a good idea," she shook her head quickly.

"C'mon Angie," her best friend whined and tugged on her arm, "we'll have such fun, I'm jazzed about this, please don't leave me hangin'."

"Okie Dokie I'll tag along, but you cannot bring me there jus' so you can run off and fool around with Freddie."

"Oh Angie, thank you!" Elizabeth pulled her in for another tight hug, "I promise I won't leave ya, tonight's gonna be so rad!"

"I can't wait!" Angeline giggled as her best friend took off running into the angel's house. "We can even help pick out each other's outfits!" she squealed as she chased after her friend.

Sugary smiles, Ferris wheel lights, twirling lovebirds, and the tempting scent of carnival delicacies surrounded the little peach as she and her friend walked towards the entrance.

They were meeting up with a few of their friends along with Freddie and his group. Angeline was wearing her favourite summertime outfit, a white halter top with pink cherries printed all over and she paired it with pink high-waisted sailor shorts. Her strawberry blonde hair was done up in milkmaid braids and a coat of peach flavoured lip gloss embellished her heart-shaped lips, she felt ethereal.

"Angie c'mon!" her best friend shouted, startling the young girl out of her dreamy state.

"Oops, sorry!" the angel scurried after Elizabeth who was approaching Freddie and the rest of the gang.

"Thought you'd never make it, we almost went in without ya," Freddie grabbed Elizabeth by the waist and laughed with his friends.

Angeline noticed the way her friend blushed and giggled at Freddie's actions, then how she twirled a piece of her hair flirtatiously while Freddie bit his lip, the action making Angeline's face scrunch up in disgust. She crossed her arms and pouted looking away from the two, she couldn't tell whether she was genuinely grossed out or maybe it was that she was jealous. She glanced back at her friend to witness Freddie basically shoving his tongue down her throat, no she was most definitely just grossed out.

"Let's go girls," their friend Sandy spoke up, "I'm gonna blow chunks if I have to watch Freddie canoodling with Lizzie any longer."

The small group headed off into the carnival, Angeline turning back to her best friend, "are ya comin' Elizabeth?" she shouted.

"Uh-huh!" she yelled back before scurrying off to her friends with Freddie trailing behind her.

It had been a few hours and the group had managed to make their way through all of the rides, Angeline clumsily making her way off of the scrambler, the illuminating glow of the carnival lights making her head spin. Her friends were all giggling at the angel's dizzy appearance comparing her to the famous scene from Bambi when the little fawn was taking his first steps.

"It's not funny," she whined and stuck out her tongue, "are ya gonna help me?"

Elizabeth came running to her side and helped her friend regain her balance, the two of them giggling as they made their way to the carnival booths.

Angeline forced her friends to stop at the cotton candy stand, the girl was desperate to get her hands on some candy floss, craving the sugary confection. Once she was finished paying her friends dragged her to a ring toss booth, she had no interest in playing since she was too busy focusing on the sweet taste melting in her mouth, so she stood off to the side and watched her friends continuously lose the rigged game.

She ripped off another piece of pink fluff and popped it into her mouth, her doe eyes widened at what she was witnessing before her, the sight was breathtaking. A tall and lean boy who looked no older than twenty was leaning against the side of one of the booths, he held a cigarette in his left hand and used his other to run it through his chestnut locks. Every inch of him was mesmerizing, he looked like the men from the films she watched with her best friends on Saturday nights.

She whipped her head around biting down on her lip nervously hoping he hadn't caught her drooling over him. 'Just one more peek' she thought to herself. She glanced over at him again, hoping that she was being discreet, she didn't want to make a fool of herself in front of such a handsome specimen.

As Theodore took a long drag from his cigarette he looked up through the smoke that clouded his vision, the smoke dissipating to reveal the daintiest woman he had ever laid eyes on, she appeared as if she had been plucked from the heavens themselves. She was munching on a piece of candy floss and had a few little pieces of the sugary substance stuck to her chubby cheeks. She enchanted everyone around her effortlessly with her alluring demeanour. She didn't need a halo nor a pair of wings to prove that she was an angel on earth.

He had caught her glancing over at him before she quickly looked away, chewing on her peachy bottom lip before puffing out her cheeks and letting out a heavy sigh. He chuckled lowly at her flustered appearance admiring the way she overdramatically huffed out air blowing a strand of hair away from her strawberry face.

She looked over her freckled shoulder to take one last peek at his face and to her surprise, he was already staring back at her. The angel's mouth parted slightly whilst her green eyes widened like a doe frozen in a driver's headlights, he found her mannerisms quite endearing. He gave her a playful wink before disappearing into the crowd, her breath caught in her throat. Her cheeks and ears painted rouge as a quiet gasp escaped her tiny lips.
