He looks outside the window, seeing the hazy clouds roll across the sky. Muffled chattering surrounds him. Students huddle within crowds in the school courtyard.
He continues to anxiously glance around, trying to catch a glimpse of her familiar brown locks.
Suddenly, he feels a tap on his shoulder, accompanied by a friendly hug.
"Hey! 🥑, could you sign my yearbook for me? It's the last day of school, and I'd really love it if our year's it boy autographed my yearbook!"
She grins widely, and he reciprocates with a smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes.
"Of course I'll sign it for you."
He writes a formal, kind parting message to her, and watches patiently as she giggles happily, walking away with her girlfriends.
However, his mouth drops as he notices a certain bashful figure behind the lockers. He grins in relief, and walks up to the person.
"Hey J, what are you doing hiding behind the lockers? I was looking for you!
She jumps in surprise, banging her head roughly onto the wall, letting out a loud yelp.
"I-I was looking for you too! But, you seemed busy, so I didn't want to be a bother."
He coughs, hiding his light chuckle. Unintentionally, his hand makes its way to her head, ruffling her soft hair.
"I'm sorry for scaring you, but you shouldn't have been lurking like an assassin in the shadows anyways. I will always have time to see you. Anyways, I heard you were moving to Spain this summer. Why wouldn't you tell me?"
He pouts and crosses his arms over his chest, leaning over, making his face level to hers. He then grins widely, seeing her face flush.
"I didn't think you'd care."
He frowns. Does she think that he doesn't care about her?
"J, we've been classmates since sixth grade, why wouldn't I care about you leaving?"
J looks to the ground guiltily. It's not like she didn't want to tell him, it's just- she believed that once they spoke again, seeing his mesmerizing, hazel eyes, hearing his voice, she wouldn't be able to go anywhere. (but his house😘)
"I'm sorry 🥑. I wanted to tell you sooner, but we've both been so busy lately."
They look at each other, awkward silence threatening them.
She clears her throat.
"urm- could you sign my yearbook for me?"
She opens her yearbook to its last page, handing him her blue pen.
He grabs the book and pen, hand grazing hers, sending sparks through the tips of her fingers.
He quickly writes a message, and shuts her book, handing it back to her.
"Promise me to look at this when you're home later today."
He pulls his yearbook out of his bag, and gestures it to her.
J let's out a shuddered breath, and opens the book. She scribbles a quick message, and slowly closes the book.
"Only if you promise the same 🥑"
Out of the blue, he envelops her in a warm hug, placing his head in the nook of her shoulders. She wraps her hands around his waist and takes in the scent of his earthy cologne.
After what seems like an eternity, he hesistantly lets go.
"I'll miss you J. Remember to text me. I'll respond regardless of the time difference."
His gaze lingers on her, and he finally turns around, quickly walking down the hall.
J sighs, letting a stray tear slip past her cheek.
"I'll miss you too, 🥑."
