It was Friday morning, and Rory would be lying if she stated she wasn't relieved for the break coming soon. It had only been the second week of school, but it felt as if it had been a month or more! She took her seat behind Tyler in History class and groaned loudly. When that didn't get a reaction from him, she sighed loudly and dropped her bag to the floor with a thud. Still nothing.
"I'm so happy it is Friday," Rory exclaimed.
"Good morning, Rory."
"Are you not excited for the weekend?"
"Weekends are alright, I suppose." Tyler got out his notebook. Rory watched him slowly test his lead pencil, and it drove her crazy.
"'Alright'?" Rory leaned forward. "I figured you'd be the guy who'd enjoy staying inside and doodling the day away on the weekend!"
"Not even close."
Rory did not believe him for a second. She let him have this one since Mr. Roberts was about to start his lesson. The lesson on Christopher Columbus was something interesting to discuss, but one Rory had heard many times before. Her mind wondered away into the past with her brother. She doodled a picture in the corner of a bear and bees. Next thing she knew, class was over.
Rory got her things ready to leave with Tyler. "Rory." Mr. Roberts called to her. "While there isn't a club meeting today, I'd advise that you be prepared for Monday's meeting. Please try and get to know more in the club, instead of sitting quietly in the back. Okay?"
"I'll try, Mr. Roberts," Rory smiled tightly and scurried away.
While Tyler made no mention of the interaction, his silence was more annoying than if he had. Rory was nearly bursting with complaints and comments when he finally spoke. "You liked the picture?"
The picture? The picture! That's what he wanted to start with? She glanced down at the front of her folder she carried, where she had stuck the cat drawing. She felt her ears burn slightly and she hugged the simple plastic thing close to her chest. "Well, it is a good drawing, so why not?"
While he said nothing, Rory saw the hint of a smile. Her next classes went by quickly, and it wasn't until the class before lunch that she saw someone sitting at her lab table. She looked around, making sure she was in the right class for the time.
Nope, this was Algebra 2 with Ms. Gann. This was her right class for the time. Rory awkwardly came to her seat and sat down. The girl looked bored, as if she had been expecting Rory, her head popped up quick when the teen girl sat across from her. "Hey!"
Rory only starred. The girl's hand dropped slowly from being out stretched. "So, um, turns out we have Algebra together. Crazy right? So, I thought I'd sit with you!"
Rory looked around the room, then back at the strange girl across from her. "Do... Do I know you?"
The girl blinked. "It's me, Rylee from History club yesterday? I handed you the spare pencil to take club notes?"
Instantly Rory saw it. The brown headed girl in front of her matched the bubbly acting one from yesterday. "When I realized who you were, I thought we could get to know each other better," Rylee continued. "That is, if you want to be friends?"
"Friends?" Another one? Rory was a little rocked. First Tyler, now this random girl. How could she explain? "I—I'm not very—I'm not good with words... or people..."
Rylee sat back a little unsure what to say to that sudden confession from Rory. Rory, of course, sank deep inside herself. Her tight smile was just the icing on the cake, and even she knew it was had fake written all over it. Then, Rylee busted into ringing laughter. Tears streamed down her face, and every single one she wiped away only caused more giggles.
