Spencer Reid knows he won't be able to have Aaron at home tonight, like all the other nights. He will be met by cold eyes telling him, again, that work is more important, far more important than himself. That's okay, Spencer also knows it's true, work is more important. At least to Hotch, and since he told Aaron he was nothing like Haley, that he would never ask him to choose between the work and their relationship, he couldn't just take it all back. Hotchner, on the other hand, took that affirmation and twisted it a bit, and now he keeps putting the work on top of Spencer, neglecting his lover, ignoring him, almost as if he doesn't exist apart from those moments he wants him to.
Still, the young agent holds onto some sort of hope that never seems to abandon him, and it gives him the strength to go to his lover's office and knock at the door patiently waiting for permission to get inside. This is going to be the last time though, he kept telling himself that but tonight he is determined to put an end to all this story if Hotch decided he wasn't worth it anymore.
Not receiving any answer, Reid gets inside the office leaving the door slightly open, he takes a step forward without getting too close to the other man, subconsciously afraid he would read the words "I don't love you" in his lover's gaze.
Aaron doesn't even look at him. He's not even worth the effort to look away from the case files.
"Yes Reid?" He says instead while he keeps writing his papers. Spencer hesitates, unsure of what to say and too scared of what will happen soon after Aaron will send him home alone.
"I was wondering if maybe you...if you wanted to have dinner together or, yeah forget dinner, I just need an hour of your time tonight, please?" Spencer hates how his voice cracks, he hates how desperate he sounds but this really is their last chance. The room stays quiet for too long, Hotch still working, Reid almost shaking. Eventually Aaron speaks without letting his eyes lend on the man in front of him. "I'm sorry, this work won't get done by itself, I'll see you tomorrow." One last time, one last time, he could ask again for the last time ever. In the next few words The younger man puts all the pain, all the exhaustion, hopelessness and despair. He prays that Aaron will understand then, be prays that Aaron will finally see him again, like he used to. "Please, please Aaron, please I need this, I need you tonight." He is almost crying now, but Aaron doesn't even flinch, the cracks in his lover's voice don't worry him. He doesn't notice the misery and the distress. "I'll see you tomorrow Reid. Go home." A quick glance at the younger man after that is not enough for him to catch the way his shoulders are hanging heavy, his skin unhealthily pale. He misses the suffocated whimper that leaves Reid's throat.

Spencer doesn't have anymore strength left to fight, to answer him. He nods slowly taking in the sight of his boyfriend one last time before placing a hand on the doorknob. "I love you-he whispers- I'm so sorry" But Hotch doesn't really hear him. Like he didn't notice the already pale light slowly leaving his lover's eyes as he took in his harsh answer.

Spencer walks slowly back to the bullpen to gather all his things, his eyes wandering around the room he spent the last years into, with his friends, his family and his lover. Memories of nights working on terrible cases overlap with the ones he has from his birthdays: this place is full of horrifying stories and heartwarming moments, each one of them, good or bad it is, shared with his team, the people Spencer would give his life for.
The man is so lost in his thoughts that he accidentally bumps into Morgan who was heading to Hotch's office, probably to ask if he could finally go home and rest.
"Pretty boy, are you okay?" He asks with slight concern in his voice. Spencer limits himself to a small nod hoping he'll be able to get away with it and already turning around. "No, wait." Derek grabs gently his arm, paying attention not to touch his wrists, that always freaks Reid out. There was a time, at the beginning of Reid and Aaron's relationship, when Derek thought their superior was hurting spencer in someway, He thought the man was too rough with him and that's why he hated being grabbed by the wrists, but then he noticed how also Aaron avoided carefully that area and so that idea soon left his mind. "Did Hotch say something that hurt you? You two fought?" Spencer doesn't deny nor he confirms. The younger simply lets the question hang in the air. "Don't worry about this Derek, go home and rest, you need it, I'll be just fine" And with these words Reid lets himself be weak, he closes the distance between the two of them and hugs his best friend, right in the middle of the bullpen, but he doesn't care, not now. Spencer seeks comfort in Morgan's arms for as long as possible before it gets too weird, at that point he lets go, as nothing happened and goes back to his desk, slowly putting all his things in his bag.
