Waiting and Wondering

Three days. Three days and no word from either Michael or Martine. Waiting and wondering, wondering and waiting...

Selina hated being left in the dark, it just caused her to worry even more. And Michael knew this.

Not only was Michael constantly at risk health-wise, whatever secretive business he and Martine were up to currently could, and most likely would, only raise that risk - she already lived with the fear of losing her friends day to day, and did not need anything to add to that already raging and rampant worry.

She would go and spend some time at Michael's lab at Horizon here and there, just in case. But none of the staff there had heard anything from either of their colleagues either.

Michael had never been so secretive with her before. And why would he hide whatever it was from his oldest friend? But maybe that was just it...

"I would do anything to save a life," Michael had said, and she knew how truthful that statement was and how committed he was to it. But where, she wondered, especially now, would he draw that line?

Waiting and wondering, wondering and waiting...

This all led her to be very distracted, and so she didn't get a lot of her own work done.

She was wrapping up at her own rented office. It was simple and bare except for the necessities for running the All Life Foundation. Lucien had constantly told her he would invest in a nice swanky office (his words, not hers) and she thanked him, but it wasn't necessary. She had all she needed for the time being. With the Foundation growing however, who knew what would happen?

She  was just wrapping up when she heard the familiar clunking of the crutches against the floor, joined by footsteps, and Lucien himself appeared in the doorway.

"Lucien!"

"Hello," he said, flashing her a grin. "I was in the area and wondered if you would fancy a stroll?"

She chuckled, knowing full well that 'I was in the area' meant that he had made a special trip out here just to see her. "That would be lovely, let's do it."

So a few minutes later found them walking through the park across the street.

"I haven't heard anything either," he said, after a long silence, knowing just how much her head was spinning with wonder, hence how quiet she was, deep in thought.

She smiled - he knew her so well. "I know, it makes me nervous."

"I know.  But if anyone can do it, it's Michael. There's a method to his madness."

She smiled.  "Yes, there is."

Then softer, he added, "Always Michael..."

She still caught it, though.  Just as he knew her so well, she knew him just as well. "You know this is all for you, for everyone like you. And you know that as soon as he finds the cure, you'll be the first one to get it."

He nodded.  "I know."

"And you're right: there is a method to his madness." She chuckled.

He chuckled too. "Indeed there is."

A couple of days more and no further word later, she was back at her office going through some emails when there was a tap at her door. She looked up and was met by two unfamiliar figures.

"Good morning," she said when two official looking men walked in.  "Officers," she added when she realized just how official they were.

"Miss. You are Miss Selina Nicholas?"

"Yes, that's me." She rose to her feet.

"We're Agents Stroud and Rodriguez with the FBI."

"Oh." She was sure the surprise was evident in her voice. Why were two FBI agents of all people standing here in her office on a mid-week morning?

Her question, thankfully, was quickly answered. She didn't know what she was expecting them to say, if anything, but it certainly wasn't what they said next: "We're here about the sudden disappearance of Dr. Michael Morbius."

(Selina is sure in for a surprise! ;) Thank you so much for reading and I hope you enjoyed! :))
