My name is Rose. I am Sixteen years old, and I live on my own, in small one studio apartment. My life is very dull. The average day for me consists of working and sleeping. I do nothing else, really. I don’t have any friends, except for Lily. But she’s really more like my sister than anything. We have known each other for almost our whole lives. I first met her when we were five, and I was in foster care. At the time, I was living with a mean old woman named Mrs. Givens, who happened to live next door to Lily and her wonderful family. I would spend most of the day over at her house, even when I was five I could tell when I was not wanted. And Mrs. Givens definitely didn’t give a damn about me. She was just in it for the money. But I figured out that you don’t trust people, for that exact reason. Most people are just going to use you and leave you. The only person I knew I could trust was Lily. We knew each other pretty well. I didn’t get to see her as much now though; she wasn’t graduating from High School until the end of next school year. I had graduated as a sophomore. I had gotten enough credits two years into high school to graduate with my diploma. I wasn’t by any means an A+ student, unlike Lily, but I had always passed all of my classes. I planned to go to college in a few years, when I have money to do so. I wanted to go to law school. But who knows where life may take me? Up until about a month ago, that question hasn’t been big in my life. I knew where life wanted to take me. I just fought it every step of the way. But recently... I have no idea what is coming. A month ago, when I was talking to Lily, I decided I wanted to try and figure out what happened to my parents. I had always been bitter about the fact that they just left me… But no one really knew what happened to them. They could be dead for all I know… Or, they could be alive. Lily advised against it, saying, “If I were you I wouldn’t. I mean, I’ve never been in that situation before. Of course you’re going to wonder… But why would you want to find them? Do you think there’s a really good reason behind them just packing their bags one day, and leaving you there to fend for yourself, at age five? What kind of horrible person just leaves their child like that? I’m your best friend; I’ll support you in whatever you chose to do. But don’t say I didn’t warn you.” I smiled at that comment. I didn't think twice about what she said. She was very protective of me, as I was of her! But Lily just didn't understand. My parents had disappeared. The police never found them. Wouldn't anyone be at least a little curious?
I really should have listened to her.
