And that is the end of the original 'series' of The Shadow Wars. (Although there's still two shorts that take place during this novel to be read.)
Countdown was a curious novel, in that I remember feeling pretty good about it as I wrote it. This is never the case, even if I tend to look back on my works and go 'wow, that came out way better than I expected, although still far short of what I'd hoped'.
In the planning stages of the novel, I locked onto an idea for the structure of basically dedicating two to three chapters to a 'mission' and then either having one chapter of downtime between, or just moving on to the next mission. And I feel like it worked out really well. Hopefully I'm not wrong.
It also occurred to me as I was writing this novel that some of the plot threads I wanted to deal with, and some of the ideas I wanted to implement, weren't going to happen before the end of Countdown.
Which meant I needed to keep the series going.
And that's how we got Necropolis 4 and the rest of the novels.
