Steve and I grew up in the same neighbourhood. Our parents knew each other from high school and we would come over to each other's houses a lot. We became close friends and before it could turn into something more than just friendship middle school happened. Steve was handsome and everyone clearly saw that, because while I was busy not falling in love with him, he became more popular everyday. And while he seemed happy I had never been sadder. I became a nobody to him, he drowned away in popularity and he didn't even look at me anymore. And for a girl in her puberty that's a lot to take in. My best friend, my childhood crush was forgetting that I existed. He forgot everything about me but I never forgot a single thing about him. His hair always fascinated me and he loved that feature of himself. I remember one moment in middle school that he looked at me again. It was our last year of middle school and I accidentally dropped a book in front of his friend group. The only thing he said was: 'watch it will ya freak'. I was a nobody to him and a nobody to the rest of his friend group. But there was this one girl Barb who was looking nicely at me as if she felt sorry for me and and if she knew how it felt. But how could she? She was friends with Steve 'the hair' Harrington! But a few days  later I overheard her talking to her friend. 'Why do we always need to hang out with them Nancy? They don't even like me, they're not nice to me. And it's not that they're super nice to you are they?'
'Barb will you stop it? They are super nice to me, especially Steve!'
'Nancy open your eyes! He is only nice to you because he is trying to get in your pants! Stop being so naïve!'
That explained all of it, I didn't know who I felt more sorry for Barb or Nancy. High School started and a lot of weird stuff started to happen to. I'm not sure how I can even explain it. And the weirdest thing was that Steve talked to me again.
