Zoltan stirred from his bed, as a nightmare stole his peaceful sleep. In the dead, cold night, he felt a wet spot in his new brown sheets. Tears formed in the child's eyes as a sudden doom loomed over him. He searched for life that lurked about the dusky room, something that would tell on him. Again, for the third night in a row, Zoltan silently slipped out of his bed, to place his feet on the cold, wooden floor and changed his clothes. Salty tears ran down his face as he grabbed his a stuffed lion and his blanket, to keep him safe as he walked down a long hall into the girl's room. The place smelled of flowers from the tree that hung low just outside the window, and the star speckled night was cover by most of it. Moonlight bearly lit the thick darkness that lingered. The boy crept over to an old bed that was in the far cornor, and shook a slumbering girl. Her eyes slowly opened as she tried to fight the tiredness that clinged to them. When she saw Zoltan's tear stained face in the dim glittering light, her eyes widen awake. Adabelle sat up and moved out of the bed. Leaning over Zoltan she asked if he had change. He nodded and climb into Adabelle's bed, as she quietly left the room. The bed was warm and smelled of fresh leaves and grass. It felt like soft cotton, as he melted slowly in a dream that promised a better tomorrow.
"Addy-bell will help us," he lawd to the stuff lion. "I love Addy-belle" he muttered, slipping into blissful sleep. Soon, a gentle nudge woke the boy and he rolled over. It's hand was cold and damp, the soft fingers brushed on his skin, causing goosebumps to rise in defiance on the boys bruised arm.
"Zoltan, I washed and dried your sheets." Adabelle's melodic voice hummed in his ear. He rolled back to face her. She had her long, thick, brown hair in a pony tail, as her bluish-grey eyes shined brightly in the moon's luminosity. Her face was hard to make out but she is beautiful like an angel that was mistakenly placed on the earth.
"But I want to sleep with you" he whined softly, looking at her with pleading eyes. He feared the monsters that lurked in the room at night fall. It's long fingers always made him quiver, and the harsh "hush" made him quiet.
"Child, you must sleep in your own bed. What will you do when someone adopts you?" She questioned him with a light smile.
"Why don't you adopt me?" He suggested, hopefully but he knew she couldn't, and that it wouldn't make his restless nights disappear.
"Sweet heart, you know I can't do that. The law wouldn't let me." Her sweet smile faded, with sigh "Alright, but roll over" and the 8-year old did as he was told. Adabelle got into the bed and pulled the thick blanket over them.
"You're not mad at me?" Zoltan worried, he knew he would get tired of his mistakes, so why wouldn't she?
"No, Sometimes people make mistakes, and it's okay to ask for help." Adabelle explained, pitching the boys cheek. "Now stop being silly and sleep. Okay?"
"Will you hum me a song?" He asked for a rare, and special treat. Adabelle smiled at him as she wind the necklace and hummed the soft tune to Zoltan.
"Hush now child,
The rain will fall
but don't cry too much.
For with each path you take,
You will surely make mistakes
And death will still claim us all.
Hush now child,
The thunder is loud
But don't cry too much
for lightning will show you the way,
No matter what the pain,
And the dark is a friend to us all."
They both drifted to sleep, as the mellifluous hymn dwindled into the twilight full of heavenly bodies.Don't forget to rate this, only if you like it! Thank you for your support!
