Quick note before reading. Any ----- is a fill space for you to put someone else's name. I wanted this to be from the reader's perspective, or something in that sense of you have the disease as you're watching someone you love disappear from your life. :D
The video is the exact playlist I was listening to while writing this. Hopefully its more immersive if y'all listen to music while reading or writing.
Happy Readings!~

It's been a few days, maybe even weeks and your favorite person has slowly stopped talking to you. You question why, if you've done anything wrong, if you've said the wrong thing, if you've gotten boring to them and they want to replace you. As these thoughts race through your mind, you feel a cough starting. Taking your hand and raising it to your mouth, you begin to clear your throat and soon let out a hefty cough. Sighing as you feel a cold may be coming along, but before you had time to think, another cough swells in your throat and chest forcing itself out of your body, along with a small item; a flower.
You sit puzzled, looking at the small and yet beautiful flower now laid out on the floor. It isn't covered in any mucus or fluid, so surely it couldn't have actually come from your body, but you dont own any flowers. Another cough appears, then one after another for a few minutes before your body calms down and stops its fit of coughing. A small bouquet was now laid out on the floor in front of you with a variety of flower petals shown. Within the bouquet were bleeding heart flowers, Carnations, and daisy petals.
In your confusion, you scoop up all the petals, putting them into a jar, before whipping out your phone. You go to google, quickly typing in, 'Why am I coughing up flowers' and the results shocked you. It had given you various links to a fictional disease called "Hanahaki Disease", 'a disease in which the victim of a one-sided love coughs up flower petals, only cured from receiving love from the other person or it being surgically removed, where the feelings for the person go with it'. You're stunned when finding this out, not to mention, the end of the description says it may end in the victim's death. Your heart begins to race, worried this was a result of —-- distancing themselves and slowly beginning to fade away.
Your mind begins to race with some conclusion to how this would be possible. It's a made up disease, right? So it shouldn't be affecting you in reality, though this isn't your reality, at least not the one you had hoped for. You longed for your person, for them to be next to you and by your side always. Not even a strong friendship can stop this disease and you didnt want to lose the love you have for —--. Surely there must be another way to fix this, there had to be. You couldn't let yourself succumb to this and have it be your fate, it simply wasnt like you to give up this easily, over a few flower petals.
The thought of going to the hospital had crossed your mind as you tried to find solutions to your issue, but you doubted anyone else had known about this disease, not to mention they may take you in for various tests. You didnt want your body or mind to suffer more than it already was. 'Think, Think. Who could help with this? Who would know about something like this?' You thought to yourself, surely there was someone out there who may be able to help.
As thoughts for a solution continued, you decided it'd be best to research more, reading the origins of this disease and what other properties this may have. Unfortunately, none of this was good news, and it seemed this was a death sentence once it started unless you had luck on your side, or enough money for surgery and will to let go of that person.
Panic filled you once more before you took to various sites, looking for other works written inspired by this illness. You found a plethora of them, and quickly began to read them; some ended happily, with the feelings returned, while others, not so much. You could only hope this wasnt going to be your fate, at least not the bad endings of this disease.
The time flew by as you read, already being night and in the early hours of the morning. You sighed before rubbing your eyes, coughing slightly as a petal or two left your lips. He looked at them intently and almost admired them, though quickly taking them and tossing them into the jar with the others. You wouldnt allow yourself to succumb to these petals.
A few months had passed by and nothing seemed to be working. You were suffering day after day with a burning pain in your chest. Your heart had grown weaker over the days and your lungs burned as you took in every breath to keep your heart pumping. Everyday you tried harder and harder to regain a connection with —-- but nothing did the trick. You've tried everything you knew, even suggesting meeting in person to talk and just hang out, but they had turned it down for one reason or another. Your heart ached for them, wanting nothing more than a few minutes to talk, even if it wouldnt cure your disease. It was a shock how you kept going, though, this would be a slow and very painful rest of your life. You didnt have the money for a surgery, so your mind and body had to suffer in turn.
The petals had begun to turn into small flowers now, differing in size and species. To entertain yourself, you kept a list, keeping track of how many and of each flower you had coughed, and now thrown up. The flowers began to come up with fluids on them, from stomach acid, to various foods you've eaten prior, and even blood at times. No stems have ever come up, just the flowers and petals themselves. You knew you wouldnt last much longer, though would hold out for as much as you could, still trying to speak to and or see —--.
During your suffering, you helped —-- with various relationship issues. They got a partner as they distanced, spending more time with them than you. It hurt you at first, but the only pain you were able to think of and focus on was the pain inside your own body. Nothing had ever hurt worse than this, but you wanted them happy, and if it meant risking your own life and well being; you'd do it.
The disease got worse. Many months passed by and your body was growing weaker by the day. It was harder for you to get out of bed in the morning, your body failing to function properly. You had various bags and buckets next to your bed, all filled with flowers, petals, and various fluids from your body. You weren't able to eat much, if anything at all, so your stomach began to growl and scream in pain much like your heart and lungs; all for various reasons. You knew your time alive was ending, and at this stage; you had no other choice than to allow it to consume you. Your sadness, pain, heartbreak, everything. All you could do was watch online as —-- had moved on almost completely. The texts stopped a while ago, just a little over two weeks; it's when the flowers really erupted from your body.
It was as if you had nothing else to live for. No one to push you along or stand by your side as you went through hard times. All you had left was your memories which would soon fade and turn to dust after you were to pass.
You sighed as you set your phone down, leaning over to cough and throw up one last time. You saw them flow out of your body. So beautiful and so disgusting at the same time. So much pain and yet such happy memories. You wonder what happened and what went wrong as you rolled onto your back. You rested your head on the pillows beneath you, staring up at the ceiling. A soft smile appears on your lips as you let your body relax, your breathing growing weak and thin. You finally allowed yourself to fail and succumb to your disease.
Closing your eyes, tears streamed from the corners and flowed down your face, rolling off your cheeks and onto your pillow, in your hair. With your last cough and last breath, a flower pops out of your mouth and rests on your lips. You breathe in one and out one last time, hearing your phone ping with a message. Your body relaxes completely and your consciousness drifts off into a calm and cold slumber.
"I ended it. I knew it was wrong. I knew who I loved. I loved you... If only I had known sooner...."
