Chapter One

Sometimes I think life is defined by the distance between what you want and what you need. At least, that’s what I’d been telling myself over the last three years. What I wanted was to find the place where I belonged, and I did. That place was in the arms of a boy called Louis. He was my everything; first kiss, first time, first love.

Pushing that aside, what I really needed was a wakeup call. I needed to realise that just because I had finally found somebody as crazy as I was, it didn’t mean I was suddenly allowed to become a reckless teenager.

So life decided to make me suffer the consequences by having me fall pregnant at sixteen. Courtesy of my parents and their utterly annoying job, I was forced to leave the father of my child behind. I didn’t even get a chance to tell him before I left that he was going to be a dad. Now, I’m kind of glad that I didn’t.

He had moved on fairly soon after our 31 days together; he auditioned for the X Factor, got put into a band, and came third. He acquired a beautiful girlfriend called Eleanor and became a worldwide sensation.

I wish I could say that I had moved on just as easily, but in truth I was still not over him, despite it being three years since we met. The thoughts that plagued my mind every single day were why he didn’t call me, and what would’ve happened if he did.

When I first found out that I was pregnant, I swore that my life was over and I would amount to nothing. My parents weren’t too proud of me either. Now though, as I was sat on the plane to London, watching the beautiful sleeping form of my son Darrell, I didn’t at all mind the way things had turned out.

Darrell was the spitting image of his dad; they had the same striking blue eyes, floppy brown hair, and contagious laugh. I figured to myself that maybe Darrell was another reason I couldn’t quite get over Louis – having a miniature version of the man himself running around didn’t help.

I snuggled down further into my seat, tightly wrapping the poorly made aeroplane blanket around myself. I sighed quietly, figuring I should probably get some sleep for the remainder of the flight. We had just taken off from Australia after spending three long months over there. We were heading to London to spend the month of December there, before jetting off to Ireland on the 1st of January.

I closed my eyes and fell into a deep sleep, dreaming about him, as I had almost every night since we first met.

I pushed open the faded red door to ‘Maggie’s Coffee Shop,’ stamping my snow-clad boots on the welcome mat to reduce to amount of snow I would surely be dragging through the café. I walked up to the counter and bought a chai tea latte, which they served to me in a little tea cup with a whip of cream on top.

Glancing around the room slowly, I was determined to find the best seat. There were very few people in the coffee shop, most sitting by the windows and reading newspapers. I decided on a seat in the far corner of the room, right next to a conveniently placed radiator.

I sat down and shrugged off my bag. I pulled out my copy of Lolita, instantly sinking into the very depths of the book and occasionally sipping from my latte.

I continued drifting through the book for what felt like minutes, but in reality was longer than an hour. Though I had drowned out most of the noise around me, I could occasionally hear people coming in and out of the café, but I paid them no mind.

Someone cleared their throat next to me. I assumed they were trying to get my attention, so I looked up from my book. Nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing could have prepared me for what I saw. It was a boy around my age with shaggy brown hair and delicate blue eyes. He was smirking down at me with one of the most breathtaking smiles I had ever seen. Never before had I thought that a boy could be considered ‘beautiful,’ but then I saw him.

“I noticed you’ve been sitting here for a while, and you don’t look like you’re leaving any time soon ‘cause you’re all wrapped up in your book, so I bought you a drink,” he said, his adorable voice filling my ears.

I looked down at his hands and saw that he was holding two steaming mugs. He handed one to me, which I gladly accepted and took a quick sip. He sat down opposite me and mimicked my actions. I quirked an eyebrow as I realised he had bought me my favourite drink, which coincidentally is what I purchased earlier.

“How did you know what to get me?” I asked, curious.

“I have my ways.” He winked and tapped his nose as if he were keeping the greatest secret of all time.

“Is that code for ‘I asked the woman at the counter what you ordered before,’ or are you just good at guessing?”

“You make it sound so dull,” he murmured, playfully rolling his eyes as if he knew it would make me laugh. It did.

I set my book down on the table and took the time to take in his full appearance. He was wearing a white polo and one of those red and white varsity jackets. He had well-defined cheekbones, small peachy lips and a tanned look to him. All in all he looked lush.

“Are you done staring, love?”

I snapped out of my observation and blushed beet red. He grinned cheekily, biting his lip.

“How much do I owe you?” I questioned. I bent down to search through my bag and retrieve my purse, meanwhile giving my face time to calm down.

“Nothing, it’s fine.” I looked up at him and he smirked lightly.

“Are you sure?”

“Yeah, it’s alright babe.”

I could’ve sworn I felt my heart stop for a second when he called me ‘babe’. It sounded so good in his accent.

“So do you mind if I sit here?” he asked.

“Not at all. I’m Bea.” I was eager to find out the mysterious boy’s name.

“I’m Louis.”
