It had been a few days now, and Jess had gotten quite frustrated with Parker avoiding him. He didn't like that the only person he had that he didn't totally hate in this town has seemingly disappeared.
She would get up and leave earlier than him, and come upstairs from work later, waiting for him to be asleep and closing with Luke, and avoiding him in the halls of school.
At this point, even Luke and Lorelai had noticed. Lorelai was in the diner sitting with Luke talking about business things while Jess and Parker took orders. Whenever Jess was on one side of the diner, Parker would be on the other.
Jess went over to Lorelai's table and poured her some more coffee. "Oh yeah, thanks" Lorelai said. "How are you, Jess?"
"I'm not bleeding or anything" he answers, absolutely uninterested in the conversation.
"Then it's gonna be a good day, huh?" She responds.
Jess ignored this, looking at Luke instead. "7:45- do you want me to go to school, or do you want to openly defy child-labor laws?" Jess asks.
"Go." Luke says Stay out of trouble." He adds as Jess walks out.
"Guess that means calling off the Chickie run" Jess says, looking around for Parker.
"Out!" Luke yells across the diner, and as Jess looks out and realizes Parker is already halfway to school, and darts out the door.
He catches up to Parker and tosses his arm around her shoulders.
"Hey, haven't seen you recently, what's up?" He asks her.
"You saw me last night" she says back, looking down. She had known that she was starting to grow attached to him, and it had become very clear when she almost asked him to take her to the debutante ball.
"Ok what's going on?" He asked her, frustrated. "We haven't hung out in days."
"We live together.' she said, looking at him weird.
"Yeah but we always spent time together, and now, I only ever see you at the diner."
"Why don't you just talk to someone else then? If you're so bored?" She asks him.
"I don't want to talk to anyone else, I don't like anybody else" he says, and she looks up at him surprised.
"What?" She asks him, taken off guard.
"Nothing, forget it." Jess says as they reach the school. Just then, the bell rings, and he walks off, to his own class.
____________
That night, Jess walked along the streets of Stars Hollow, bored out of his mind. Then all of a sudden he sees Parker, across the road from him carrying yellow caution tape and a pack of chalk.
He jogs to go catch up with her as she walks. Once he gets to her, he surprises her and she yelps a bit, almost dropping her stash.
"Shhhh!" She says to him. "Be quiet!"
"Why? What are you planning?" He asks.
"None of your business" she answers, but he doesn't give up. For the next few minutes, he pesters her, following to see what's going on.
"Fine." She gives in. "I'm pulling a prank on Taylor Doose" she says.
"Need assistance?" He asks, grinning. Parker hesitates for a second. She wants to say yes, after all, she had missed him. But if she gets attached and has to leave, she wouldn't want to do that to him. She could never know when her foster father might come to find her. He was the chief of police where he lives, she had to keep a low profile. But then, Parker gives in.
"Fine." She says. "Here, take the caution tape."
He smiles at her, and they walk together all the way to Doose's market.
___________
The next morning, Parker and Jess walk out of the diner to see a crowd of people huddling around Doose's. They share a knowing look and go to lean against a light pole across the street.
Looking over, Parker can see Rory and her boyfriend, Dean standing near the store, looking at a chalk outline of a dead body. Rory looked concerned until she saw them standing together at the light, snickering.
She sends a disapproving look their way. They smirk at each other and walk off, as he tosses an arm around her.
From there, they walk to the bridge again and sit in the tree line nearby. He hands her a book, and she smiles at him as she takes it.
"I got this for you the other day, I saw it in the bookstore and I thought you'd like it." He says.
"Thank you." She says, and then she opens the book. "Wait... You annotated it?" She asked him.
"Yeah.. I thought it would be more...personal." he says, looking away.
"Thank you.... I love it." She says. She opens the book and begins to read it. He pulls a cigarette from his pocket, and offers it to her, but she looks at him funny.
"Luke said you should stop that" she says, smiling.
"Well I won't tell him if you don't" Jess answered. In response, she pulls her lighter from her back pocket and lights it for him. She goes back to reading the book, leaning against his shoulder. He looks at her smiling.
He didn't notice that he was still watching her read until she turned around and looked at him funny. "What?" She asked him. She tucked a stray piece of hair away from her face as she sat up.
"Does my hair look weird?" She asks him.
"Huh? No" he responds.
"Then what are you looking at?" She asks him, confused.
"Oh sorry, nothing." He answers. She shrugs her shoulders and goes back to resting on him. He smiles a bit, leans back on the tree behind him and closes his eyes. He was glad that things seemed to be going back to normal.
____________
A little while later, Jess looks down, to see Parker asleep. She had moved to laying on his lap a while ago, and must have fallen asleep while reading.
He looks down at her, and he smiles. He starts to run his fingers through some of her hair falling over his legs.
At this moment, Luke walks across the bridge. He looks over and he sees the two sitting together. He walks over, and looks down at Jess.
"Is she asleep?" He asks him.
"What do you think?" He says. Luke rolls his eyes at this, before continuing.
"Here, let me pick her up, we'll take her home." He says, and he lifts her into his arms. From there, they walk back to Luke's, and as he walks into the diner, he sees a woman he used to know.
"Lucas!" The woman says, but Luke shushes her, gesturing to the girl in his arms.
"Hey Mia, I'll be right back down in a minute" he says and goes towards the stairs. Right before he gets there, he turns back to Jess. "Jess, take care of customers until I come back down"
"No problem Uncle Luke" he responds, and goes to take the woman's order.
