I was only fifteen when I first met Ashley, I remember staring across the street with tears in my eyes while I watched the men take my things from the hauling truck and into my new home. I hated change and now my whole life as I had known it was about to alter completely.
I was terrified of the unknown, especially a new school with new opportunities for bullies, but I never thought I'd have to worry about that until one day my dad came home excited about his new promotion, and of course I was excited until he broke the news on the potential "relocation" over our supposed celebratory dinner. What a joke that was, felt like the time they had told me our family dog Maurice had died, cried for a week after that, this feeling was very similar.
I thought the world as I had known it was going to end, and I'd end up like Maurice, or maybe I'd be wishing to trade places with him. Either way anything would be better than to be sitting here in a completely different state, not knowing a single soul.
"Why are you crying?" I threw my head up quickly but squinted trying to adjust to the sunlight, yet through the offending rays of light stood the brightest sun of all. A girl around my age stood with a kind smile and her head tilted in genuine curiosity.
The summer heat seemed to suddenly spike in an increasingly alarming rate as I stared at the pretty girl in front of me. I could only look up at her dumbfounded, completely taken aback by her sheer presence.
"I uh." All I could do was flop my mouth like a fish, or whatever SpongeBob said.
"Are you new here?" The second question was a little less embarrassing and I decided it was time to close my mouth and actually respond.
"Yeah." Stupid stupid, Is that all you're going to say?!
The girl nods in approval and doesn't show any ill intentions as she points at the spot next to me.
"Can I sit with you a bit? My brother is driving me crazy so I could really use the company." She didn't wait for a reply and made herself comfortable, and as soon as she sat down she went on and on about anything and everything. As if we had been friends forever and she was only filling me in on the things I had missed, and only now am I realizing that she sat down because she knew I was the one in need of company.
"My name is Ashley." My eyes boar into her big brown eyes, and in an instant my young naive heart fluttered with an unfamiliar beat.
