WHEN I was in secondary school, I had this friend that was so funny and lively. He was really smart and his name was Ibi. Although he was in a class younger than me he had my attention as we had a lot in common.
One day he didn't come to school and I was surprised at his absence but expected to see him the next day. He didn't come to school until two weeks later. He came back looking skinnier but still as lively. He continued behaving like himself and only said he had been sick.
I started noticing how he would miss school some days but still bounce back. I suspected he was a sickle cell patient but kept it to myself and I didnt ask him either.
During his class presentation one day where i was invited to judge alongside some of my friends, he talked about Sickle Cell Anemia and how that doesn't stop one from being who they wanted to be. It was then i knew that he also knew what he had.
We had a class party and he was invited. He was so lively despite recently recovering from another attack. I got so scared he might collapse and i told him to chill. He told me was going to live everyday like it was his last.
On the day of our final exam, he died. Everyone of his friends got a letter he had addressed to us telling us how much he loved and valued us. Mine had a picture of us together. He told me he always knew I knew of his condition and thanked me for accepting him wholly. I cried. The whole school cried for Ibi.
Till today, there is celebrate Ibi's day in our school where on his birthday we gather to talk about our dear Ibi and how much he affected our lives💙
