When he opened his eyes, it was dark. For a moment Bill wasn't sure where he was. He looked around him in confusion. Trying to make out where he was and what he was doing. After a brief moment of confusion he remembered.
He was by the lake. He was there for a reason. The lake was well known around his town. It was a huge lake. The mayor was planning on building a bridge across it. But Bill knew that the bridge won't be coming any day soon. He was there because he was intrigued by the stories that his grandma used to tell him. And now he wanted to see for himself if it was just a tale.
"A long time ago," the story went. "There was a rich merchant in town. He was so wealthy that everyone in town was jealous of his wealth. There were times when people even tried to steal from him. But the merchant had none of that. After a long time of struggle to keep his wealth safe, he finally decided to leave town. And so one day he packed everything he had and went to cross the river. The boat he was in started it's journey. Within a few minutes a thunder storm started. The boat was almost in the middle by then. There was no turning back for the merchant. He kept going forward. A huge gush of wind came and the boat tilted. It didn't come back straight. Everyone on the boat sank, along with the merchant's treasure."
Over the course of years a lot of people have tried to get the fabled treasure, but none have ever succeeded. A few of the people just disappeared, never to be seen again. Bill was very intrigued by this story.
His grandma had told him that the ghosts of the merchant still stayed with the treasure and kep it safe from the greedy people who try to come for it.
That night Bill was there to try and find the treasure. He had sneaked out of his house, stealthily and had come to the lake. Before he did anything, he looked around making sure that he was the only one there.
Bill want sure that he was going to find anything, but he was curious to find out. He took out a boat that was tied to a post and rowed it out into the lake. The night sky above him was starry and bright. It looked beautiful. He enjoyed the view for a minute and then brought his mind back to the task at hand. He wasn't sure what he was going to do. He wasn't going to just jump in and swim around.
In the end Bill itself understood that his idea of finding the treasure like this was a fruitless one. So he decided to just row around for a few more minutes enjoying the night sky and then go back.
After a few minutes as he turned back aiming for the shore, the fog came. He hadn't seen that coming either. It just came and surrounded him, as if someone just put a blanket on his world. He couldn't see anything. Even the beautiful night sky was not visible for him now. He thought that he knew which direction the shore was at. He rowed for a few minutes without any issues, but the few minutes turned to ten and the ten turned to thirty, but he never reached the shore. Bill was getting afraid now. What had he gotten himself into.
After a few minutes of bewilderment Bill saw something else that bought a bit of hope back to him. Somewhere in the fog ahead of him was a light. A blue light.
Bill didn't know where the light was coming from. But nevertheless he started rowing towards the light. It got closer with every hard stroke that Bill took. Finally after what seemed like hours he reached it. But now things turned wierder.
The light that he seemed to follow was under the water. That was weird. He could have sworn that the light he followed seemed to be coming from ahead of him and not under him.
"What is that?" Bill asked loudly. He quickly raised his head. Noises. He had thought that he had heard noises. But from where? From under there? That was impossible. Wasn't it?
The light was coming from under the water. He was sure about that. What he wasn't sure of was the noise. He couldn't tell where it was coming from. By now, Bill was completely tired. His hands were tired from rowing. And he was exhausted.
But as he looked down at the light, it seemed to be calling for him. Bill knew how to swim, but as of now he didn't have the energy to do it. But he light kept calling to him.
"Come," the light voice said. He was sure he heard it now.
"Come and get the treasure." The voice whispered. This line got his complete attention. Did it just say the treasure?
"Yes, the treasure." The voice whispered as if it had read his mind.
"Come down and get the treasure. You deserve it." The voice kept calling to him. As if in a trance, Bill jumped into the cold lake. He wasn't in control of himself anymore. The light. It was the the light. The light had called to him. It had promised him the treasure. He had just answered the call.
He just floated down and down. He couldn't move. It seemed as if he didn't need any air. He just floated down. The Blue light got brighter as he got closer. He extended his hand as he got close to it. He then passed the light.
It took Bill a moment to understand what happened. He had passed the Blue light. Wasn't he supposed to find the treasure in the Blue light. He struggled. He tried to swim but he couldn't. He was running out of air. His lungs felt like exploding. As his world grew darker around him, he kept his eyes on it. The Blue Light. Was it getting darker or was he going farther away. He didn't know. It just went darker.
