CHAPTER V
REGRESSION.
THE CHASE TO SAFETY was quickly growing futile. Through each turn of a corner, they were met with a pack of infected students and through the limited metres they could run off to they were forced to turn back or find another escape route.
It had been their sheer adrenaline and fear as well as Jisu's perilous escape from death that had pushed and aided them to find their way to safety. But now, after what felt like hours trying to seek safety, Jisu was soon growing tired. In comparison to Dae-hyun, Jisu was rather unfit to try and outrun crazed students for that long.
"Dae.... please, can we stop for a second?"
Either Dae-hyun didn't hear Jisu or he'd completely ignored her in his desperate need to find an escape, the boy had kept running, dragging an expended Jisu along. If they hadn't been running from students trying to tear their flesh apart, the girl would've marvelled at the stamina Dae-hyun had.
It's as if he was built for this, Jisu thought pointedly.
Suddenly they came to an abrupt stop.
Dae-hyun let go of Jisu's hand and approached a set of glass doors, pulling on them with urgency, mentally bidding them open. Jisu was rather relieved to at least have a few seconds to catch her breath though, as much as she didn't want to admit it, the loss of Dae-hyun's warmth from his hand made her anxious.
The door wouldn't budge no matter how hard Dae-hyun was trying to pry it open. Jisu stood watching him struggle while trying to keep her breathing and the beating of her heart back to a normal rate.
A scream echoed in the air.
This was normal. The screams should've fallen on deaf ears. In their pursuit of safety, Jisu and Dae-hyun had run past desperate cries and horrifying screams emitted from their fellow peers. They'd run past students getting mauled by other infected students with no hesitation.
Jisu let Dae-hyun navigate in the chaos. Effectively she'd let him turn the other dying students away. They'd run past their desperate and reaching arms and left them to die. There was nothing they could do to save them. Was there?
But standing here unmoving, Jisu shuddered at the sound.
"Fuck," Dae-hyun cursed and kicked the door out of frustration.
Jisu came up behind him and reached an arm out towards the boy. They were running out of time. If they didn't move soon, they were about to be swarmed by other infected students.
But Jisu hadn't needed to drag Dae-hyun. A student had sprinted up on the other side of the glass door and smashed into it.
Dae-hyun let out a small squeal and nearly tripped backwards. Jisu caught him before he could fall.
