A few months ago...

"Hawks?" Her ears twitched as she sat across from me, occupying the couch opposite of the living room table. She wouldn't look me in the eyes as I stared at her intently with pleading eyes.

"Please, don't do this to me..." My voice cracks, my lip trembling. "Please, don't say it..."

"Hawks...we're out of time." She gives a painful smile, laughing as tears streamed down her chin. It's the first time I saw her smile in months, but it wasn't the type of smile I wanted to see. "We can't avoid it anymore."

"Please, I'll...I'll-" I stammer, gripping the arm rest, my wings feeling heavy on my back as they shake. "I'll do better, I promise. This is still new to me-"

"Well, it's getting old to me!" She raises her voice, and I sink into my chair, taken aback. "I've tried, Hawks. You've been a pro since you were what, 18? You're 24 now! That shit isn't going to fly with me anymore!" Her voice cracks as it reaches new volumes she's never used on me. "We...I let it slide when you were 20. I was 23, and still just as young and dumb. It's been years, Hawks. I don't even know your fucking name!"

I open my mouth to tell her, but she holds her hand out, stopping me.

"Don't!" She screams out, her chest heaving. Her eyes were shut tight, as if she didn't want to see me anymore. "Don't. It will make this harder for both of us."

"Please..." I pleaded, my voice raspy. "I'll give it everything that I can, I-I need you."

"Yeah, but when I needed you, you were out doing God knows what." She rubs her forehead. "You never cheated on me, no. But it felt that way, seeing you in the arms of other heroes. Taking them out to dinner instead of me. I understand you want to keep your image up, but what about mine? You think I want to hear other people telling me my boyfriend is out getting rubbed on by another woman? You think I want people sending me articles about you running around town, avoiding paparazzi?" She spits out, her range of fire hitting me in my chest. I grasp it, feeling as if life was being sucked out of me.

"Please..." Is all I can force out, and she shakes her head, standing up.

"Listen, Hawks..." She huffs, running a finger through her silver hair. "You may not have any goals that you want to set in life, but I do." She finally eyes me, her red eyes beaming through me. "You may think you have all the time in the world to be young and fuck around, but once you get my age, you'll realize all the time you wasted. We aren't that far apart, but fuck. You have to grow up. I want to get married. I want a family. I want stability. And you don't want that." She starts making her way to the door, and I run up to her, grabbing her arm.

"Please I-" My voice gets lodged in my throat. "I do want those things! I do!"

She turns to me slowly, a sad smile on her brown lips. No matter how much she smiled, it still didn't seem real. She cups my face, gently caressing it.

"And I know that one day, you'll have those things." She gives me a kiss on the cheek, lingering as if the decision she were about to make would be too great. She clears her throat, letting me go.

"You just won't have those things with me."

She quickly twisted out of my grasp, not giving me time to stop her as she sprinted out the door, slamming it shut in my face as I collided with it.
