It was the hottest day of the year, the hottest day in years. So hot that the sky above the road rippled and you could feel the sunburn forming on your face. It was too hot, and definitely too hot to go out, but unfortunately I had plans and not much of a choice.
At around 1:03 PM I found myself leaving the cool heaven that is my apartment going out into the fiery depths of hell. And to make things worse, my apartment has no elevator, so after climbing down 5 flights of stairs I was a little more than winded. When I arrived at the lobby Kai was there. He wore a plain white shirt and a pair of denim shorts, probably the least amount of clothes he could wear without being completely naked. Even so, he was fanning himself with his hand, looking as miserable as I felt. His face changed quickly, though, when he spotted me, he grinned and jogged over to me arms reaching out. He trapped me in one of his big bear hugs and laughed. "Y/N, what took you so long, huh?" I grumbled, pushing his arms off me and giving him an annoyed glare. "Sorry, I just wasn't very excited to go out and melt in the sun." He sighed, grabbing my hand and leading me out of the lobby into the even hotter outside world. "Where are we going?" I asked, dragging my sandals on the sidewalk. "You'll see, you'll like it, trust me."
After walking for much longer than I would've liked, he leads me into a very nautically themed restaurant. The restaurant faces the ocean and the sky, both big and blue and beautiful. But that isn't the best part, the best part is the cool air that hits me upon entering. Kai smiles at my refreshed face, "I made sure to find a place with good food and AC, but mostly AC." I nod and we both approach the man standing at the front to be seated. The man brings us to a beautiful table, right next to the window that faces the sea. The waves are calm today, and you can see couples and family's gathered on the beach. "I'll give it to you Kai, this is pretty great." He claps his hands together cheerfully, "Great! I knew you'd love it." I nod and the waitress approaches us, notepad in hand. "What can I start you two off with today?"
Time skip
We both leave the restaurant hand in hand, and I begin walking back towards my apartment before Kai stops me, dragging me in the opposite direction. "Oh-? We're not done?" I ask, following him. He shakes his head, smiling as we walk down a flight of stairs. I already know where these stairs lead just by the amount of sand on them. So we both walk down them, taking our time as the sun sets in front of us. I smile, happy I agreed to go out with Kai today. Kai is a great friend, there is never a dull moment with him. Maybe because of his bubbly personality, or maybe because of the closeness we have obtained in our relationship. Me and Kai have been friends since 7th grade, and almost every memory I can remember from that time to now, is with Kai. And to be frank, I wouldn't have had it any other way. I love him more than most friends love each other, but it doesn't matter. We both feel the same way, it's mutual. As I walk, still wrapped up in my thoughts, I trip over a small stone, and proceed to fall forward, the wooden steps being my inevitable fate. Luckily, Kai is quick, so he grabs me by the shoulders and saves me from a broken nose and a big hospital bill.
"Hey! Pay attention!" He scolds, shaking his head as he begins walking in front of me. I ignore his whining and decide to do some of my own, "Kai, we've been walking for forever, how much longer?" He groans, stopping to face me. "You really need to get out more." I sigh and we both decide it's best to continue walking in silence.
Finally, we finally reach the end of the not-so never ever ending stairs. Kai raises his hands to the sky, cheering: "We made it!" I giggle at him and playfully nudge his shoulder, he does the same to me, though a little more aggressive because of course he has to one up me. I roll my eyes and begin running away from him and to the ocean. My feet slip in the sand as I run, and I can hear the waves' crashing become louder and louder with each stride I take.
I abruptly stop when I know I'm close enough to the shore to wet my feet and turn around to see Kai following close behind me. When he reaches me he rests his arm on my shoulder and takes a deep breath of the salty air. "You're actually surprisingly fast." I scoff, "That shouldn't be news to you." I shrug his hand off my shoulder and crouch down to take a closer look at all the lovely shells and stones hidden away in the sand. I dig my hand in and pull up a green stone, a broken piece of seashell and a small crab. I'm startled by it and quickly set it down, back in its' home. "There you go little guy, sorry." Somewhat shaken up I stand back up and reach for Kai's' hand. He gladly takes it and caresses the back of my hand with his thumb. "C'mon Y/N, let's go sit down."
We find a dry empty spot on the beach and Kai pulls out a blanket from his tote bag. He plops down on it and pats the spot next to him, inviting me to sit beside him. I oblige and sit, staring at the nearly invisible sun, as it dips down under the sea. Now the sky is dark, the only light coming from it being the crescent moon and a beautiful arrangement of stars. I smile, letting out a deep sigh as I lay my head down. "You tired?" Kai asks, also laying down. I nod, my eyes are shut but I'm not asleep quite yet. Kai rolls over so he is facing my back and wraps his arms around me, patting my stomach. The last thing I hear before drifting off is Kai whispering in my ear, "Goodnight."
I am roughly awaken around 3 hours later, Kai is violently shaking me and pinching my cheek. "Hey- Hey! Y/N, oh my gosh, wake up!" I open my eyes and grumble at him, turning away. "Y/N, I'm serious, it's illegal to sleep here, c'mon." I sigh, giving in and sitting up. It's even darker out then it had been when I fell asleep, and the stars somehow look less bright. Kai pulls me up by my arm and shakes the sand off the blanket. Then he rolls it up and puts it back in his bag. He then crouches down and gestures for me to come over. "Get on my back, I'll take you home." I am so drowsy that I don't even fight him, and crawl onto his back. He grabs my legs and starts walking towards the stairs.
By the time we have reached the top of the stairs Kai is pretty much hyperventilating and his legs are shaking. Even so he proceeds walking but I stop him before he can go very far. "K.. Kai.. stop. Just let me-" I hop off his back and rub my eyes. This time I crouch down and gesture him towards me. He looks confused, and then surprised, waving his hands at me. "No- Y/N- It's fine-" I groan, rolling my eyes at him. "Just- come on." I say as I run a hand through my hair. He finally gives in and carefully gets onto my back. He is surprisingly light and I don't have much trouble carrying him. I begin walking towards my apartment, I guess he'll be staying over tonight.
When I reach my apartment I unlock the door carefully, making sure not to wake him. He snored softly as I slid off my shoes and turned on the living room light. I open the door to my room and sit down on the edge of the bed so I can carefully set him down. When he is finally off my back I delicately take off his sneakers and bring the blanket up to his shoulders. I assume he is asleep so I get up to leave before being roughly pulled back onto the bed. "Y/N.. let's drink."
Although I am not very for it, I pull out a bottle of soju for him, and set it down next to two shot glasses. "Here."He nods his head and groggily opens up the bottle and pours a glass for himself then me. He downs his quickly and wipes his mouth with his sleeve. "Sorry you had to carry me." He says, running a hand through his hair. I giggle, shaking my head. "Don't be, it was my pleasure." He chuckles at this and rests his head on his hand. I take a sip of my soju, and set it down. "So, what is this? Midnight alcohol cravings?" He shrugs, "Well, I wanted to tell you something, actually. I just- I guess my nerves got the best of me." I nod and take another sip of my drink. "Ok.. Well, go on then. Tell me." Suddenly, he takes both my hands in his and squeezes them. "Y/N, I've known you for eleven years. And, I just- I love you honestly." I smile, "I love you too, Kai. You're a great friend-" "No. No, no, no. You don't understand. Y/N I.. I love you more than that. Like- like the kind of love where I want to hold you, and love you, and- and kiss you.." He whispers the last part, and looks away from me. I say nothing.
When I've finished cleaning up the glasses I go to stand by Kai. I take his hand in mine and lead him back to the bedroom. It's much later now, around one or two AM. He lays himself down, and turns his head away from me. I pet his hair and then set my hand on his shoulder. "Kai, please look at me." He waits a second, and then turns to me. Without a word, I lean down, placing my hand at the side of my face, and I kiss him. His lips are soft and warm, and although the kiss only lasts a few seconds, it's probably the best kiss I've ever had. "So- You do like me?" I laugh and go to kiss his cheek. "Yes."
