VIVIAN

I have always loved the little yellow flowers they call buttercups. Such beautiful flowers they are. Simple and dainty, but so very pretty. I sat out in the garden where my grandfather had specifically planted the flowers for me.

I had been living with my grandfather, Digory Kirke, since I was thirteen. My parents died in a tragic house fire while I was out to get more ingredients for the dinner my mother was making that night. When I came back, there were men outside of my house trying to put out the huge fire. It was no use, though.

I screamed for my parents but my neighbor had already told me that they didn't make it. It was the worst day of my life. Even worse knowing my mother was pregnant with my sibling, which I was very excited about.

Now, I live as the only child in my grandfather's house. At first, I hated it. However, I have learned to love the silence and the freedom I get.

I messed with the petals of one of the flowers as I racked my brain for something to do, something fun. Today was a slow day in the mansion with grandfather busy like always, and a few of our men staff members gone due to the war.

I felt the warm sun on my face one minute, and then the cool air the next. I looked up to see my grandfather blocking the sun. "Hello grandfather," I smiled, "what do you need?" He smiled back down at me and held out his hand.

"Walk with me, Vivian." I took his hand and pulled myself off of the ground.  We walked into the woods on the stone path that led to the creek. "I have something to tell you."

"What is it?" I asked.

"We're going to have guests for awhile, until the war is over." he said, looking down at me. I furrowed my brows as this was very unusual. We never had guests, not since I had arrived. The only guest we got was my aunt who visited for only the day.

"What kind of visitors?" I asked.

"The Pevensie siblings." he answered. I looked up at him in shock. Siblings? Children were staying with us? "Yes I know dear, it'll be a great change for you. Especially because there are four of them. The oldest is your age though!"

"Four?!" I shouted. He nodded. "How am I to deal with four new children when I've been alone here for three whole years?"

"You'll figure it out dear. Besides, you always wanted to have a sibling. I know you were devastated when you lost your parents and your sibling. This way, you can have four siblings." He tried to lighten the mood but  it only made me more frustrated.

"What are their names? What are their ages? Are they nice?" I rambled. He chuckled at me and readied himself to answer all of my questions.

"Their names are Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy. Peter is sixteen, like you. Susan is fifteen, Edmund is thirteen, and Lucy is twelve. And yes dear, they are very nice people." I breathed a sigh of relief. At least there was a girl only a year younger than me.

"Okay, when will they be arriving?" I asked. He looked down at his watch and back at me.

"Any minute now!"

"What?!" I shouted again, rushing back to the mansion to freshen up.

I pulled my brown hair out of my eyes and tied it with a yellow bow in the back, then I put on my favorite yellow dress. I smiled in the mirror at my appearance. I then pulled my stockings on and slid my white shoes on.

I heard voices downstairs, many voices. I was going to make a bad impression being late and I was somewhat nervous to meet them. I walked down the staircase and listened in to their conversation for a bit.
