Daniel Ricciardo - Birthday Surprise

 The worst part about having my birthday in April is not being able to see Daniel on my birthday. His racing schedule makes sure of that. This year my birthday is on a Sunday, during the Australian Grand Prix, Dan's home race. It's bittersweet not being able to be there to support him, but the April grand prix's are hard for me to get to because of exams for university. I'm finishing up my fourth and final year of my degree so next year I'll be able to travel with him on tour.

Daniel and I have kept our relationship mostly private because of our eleven year age gap. It makes me uncomfortable when people assume I'm only with him for his money, when in reality I'm with him because he's an amazing man and because I love him dearly.

It was the day before my birthday and I spent most of the day studying. I watched the qualifying round and was so proud of Daniel for getting P7. As I was watching the end of the round, there was a knock at my apartment door. I opened it to see a beautiful flower arrangement waiting for me. It was a beautiful mix of tulips, eucalyptus and baby breath. I smiled as I set it on the island in my kitchen and grabbed the note from it.

Happy early 22nd Lucy, I wish you could be here, love Dan

I could feel myself tearing up at his note. I wish that I could be there to support him, but it was still so nice of him to send me flowers even though he's so far away. As I was lost in thought, my phone started to ring. It was my mom.

"Hi mom," I said as I answered the phone.

"Hi sweetheart, happy early birthday. Listen I am under strict orders to come and get you right now so be ready with enough things for a few days away."

"Okay mom I'll see you soon," I hung up my phone and got to work packing my suitcase. I definitely overpacked because I didn't know where I was going or what I was doing.

My mom knocked on my apartment door a half an hour later. She gave me a big hug and I joined her in the car. I looked around and noticed that she didn't bring any luggage with her.

"Mom, where are we going?"

She smiled before speaking. "I can't tell you, it's a surprise."

I texted Daniel while we were driving

Thank you for the birthday flowers Dan, they're perfect

Perfect flowers for my perfect girl

I'm so proud of you for getting P7, you better kick ass tomorrow

Thank you baby but I wish you were going to be here for the race

Guilt swam around in my belly. For a formula one driver, a home race means everything. Daniel is the only Australian in formula one, so the whole crowd is cheering for him. I wish exams didn't exist so I child go see him. I put my phone down as my mom pulled into the parking lot of the airport. 

"Lucy, here you go," my mom said as she pulled out a plane ticket to Melbourne. "Daniel wants you to be there tomorrow no matter what, so go and have fun and have a good birthday."

I gave my mom a hug and we got my luggage out of the car. I breezed through airport security and next thing I knew I was on my direct flight to Melbourne. I slept for most of the flight to help ease the jet lag I knew I was going to have. 

Once I got off the airplane and grabbed my luggage I started to make my way to the exit. It was four in the morning here in Melbourne, meaning it was officially my birthday here, and I hoped Daniel wasn't staying up this late to come get me with his race tomorrow. 

"Lucy! Over here!" I turned to see Daniel waiting for me. I ran over and threw myself in his arms. "Happy birthday beautiful, I'm so glad you're here," he said as he gave me a kiss.

"This is the best birthday surprise ever Dan, I'm so lucky to have you."

We drove back to Daniel's hotel and he brought in my luggage for me. I showered quickly and grabbed one of his t-shirts to wear to bed. When I crawled into bed, Dan was already asleep. I smiled before snuggling into him and putting my head on his chest.

"I love you Dan, this is the best birthday surprise ever."
