Chapter 1
Beads of sweat trickle down my face, drenching me as I run. I will not let them catch me.
Sirens blare from behind but I keep going, pumping my arms and legs to the point of exhaustion. My breath comes in ragged gasps, coursing through my lungs and igniting fire in my already parched throat.
Vast wasteland stretches out before me, dwarfing me with its enormity. Thick, plumes of acrid smoke billow from huge, crumbling chimneys, rising up from dilapidated buildings and towers.
Skirting round one of them, I rest my hands on my knees and allow myself a brief rest, coughing and wheezing like an asthmatic.
I don't think they can see me from here, but I won't have long before they catch up.
The sirens continue to amplify, in addition to the pounding of my heart. If the cops can't see me, i fear the rapid sound of the beating will lead them straight to my location.
Finally catching my breath, I take a quick peak behind the stonework. Beams of red and blue lights flare across the horizon, casting their brilliant light on anything in their radius.
I have no choice; I must keep running.
Yet, I know in my head that I could never outrun such a force, even if I devote all of my strength into the effort. Yes, I realise that I'm fighting a war that cannot be won. However, I'll do everything I can to make damn well sure that I go down trying.
