Chapter 5: Small Town Talk

Mistelle Diner hasn't changed one bit. The customers are all the same, as are the staff making it seem like I went back in time. Jere looked at me concerned when we sat down at the table I used to share with dad since all the other tables were full. The towns people looked at Jere wierdly, but seemed to already accept me as one of them.

"Mrs. Vanguard it's a pleasure to see you again. Do you mind if I join you?" a voice said from behind Jere making me look up and see my father.

"Not at all Mr. Alexandria. Jere this is Mr. Phillip Alexandria, Mr. Alexandria this is my brother-in-law Jeremy Little," I introduced them as he sat down.

"It's nice to meet you sir," Jere said holding his hand out for our father to shake.

It was weird seeing them finally meet when daddy wouldn't even know that he was meeting his son. Jere seemed to smile brightly at the chance of finally meeting our father he knew dad didn't know about him when mom gave him away, so he'd been looking forward to getting to know dad. I wondered if that was the real reason that Jere came to visit me this time. Dad looked at him confused as if he could sense something familiar in the man before him.

"Nice to meet you as well Jeremy, are you an relation to Angelique and Gregory Little?" he asked probably thinking that was why he sensed something familiar about his son.

"They're my adoptive parents," Jere answered truthfully.

"They were my wife's best friends when she was little. I heard about their business taking off, but no one ever mentioned them having a son," my dad said.

Jere looked surprised as if he had never known that the people he grew up calling mom, and dad had been friends of his real mom. Maybe that was the truth about why Jere was adopted about the Little's and they knew from the beginning who his real parents were. That could explain why mom trusted them enough to let them adopt her son, since it was a completely private adoption.

"Actually after college she spent a year with them before she got involved with the company," dad said sticking to the story he always had when I was a kid.

"Don't you mean before she joined the FBI," I whispered so that only dad and Jere could hear me before I could stop myself.

"What the hell are you talking about?!" he exclaimed angrily.

"I don't know what you mean," I said innocently turning back to my food.

"How did you know my wife was an agent, wait you're the agent Jamie said was looking into Carmen's death aren't you?" he asked putting the pieces together.

"I was a real estate agent if that's what you mean," I said playing dumb.

"Mommy why are you yelling at each other?" Kali asked sucking on her thumb well she looked at my dad shyly.

"We aren't yelling sweetie he just misheard what I said," I said with a bright smile at my daughter.

I sent a half hearted glare at my father saying that now wasn't the time for him to hurdle accusations at me. We awkwardly sat in silence for the few minutes there was before a waitress approached us. Her appearance made me almost choke she had been my other best friend besides Mirina, but she had been in love with Jamie. We had a huge fight after she had accidently caught us kissing behind the school one day which made me wonder how the whole town hadn't told me he had been dating Carmen.

"Hello I'm Diana what can I get you folks?" she asked with a bright smile at Jere.

"I'll have the usual Di," dad said with a smile up at her although it looked sad.
