It was cold...cold and dirty. They were supposed to be home by now, right? Had she fallen asleep on the ride home, was this a dream? It must be, right? There wasn't any other explanation for why she was lying in the dirt under the tall, tall trees. None that made sense, anyways.
Molly sat up slowly, looking around. Her back ached the way her papa had described his hurting after a long night at work, but everything was so cold.
Ed sat nearby, his arms wrapped around his knees and his head down. He must be cold too...so she scooted over to hug him. He tensed at her touch before clinging onto his little sister.
"Molly- Are you okay? You aren't hurt too bad, are you?"
"Why would I be hurt in a dream, Eddie? That's silly."
"A dream?..." He paused. "Yeah, I guess that is pretty silly. Hey, do you want to see what we can do in our dream?"
With that, he stood shakily like a newborn deer, offering her his hand to help her up, which she readily accepted.
"Do you think we can fly? Oh! We could go all the way up to space if we can!"
"It wouldn't hurt to try, right? You try. I'll be here to catch you if you fall."
So she lept into the air, reaching her arms up to try to lift herself higher than the world would regularly let her, hoping with all her might. She stayed aloft, eyes squeezed shut before she heard her brother clap below.
"You're doing it, Molly, you're doing it!"
The young girl opened her eyes slowly, wobbling a little in the air before giggling gleefully. She was doing it! She really was!
"Come on! Come on, Eddie! We can go on a space adventure! Hurry!"
So he followed her up, bringing her beloved plush rabbit up with him.
"Let's go on a space adventure, Molly. At least until we wake up at home...let's go." He knew it would never happen, but it didn't matter.
They would find a way out eventually.
