Throughout the Animal Crossing series, there have been hobbies and pastimes for villagers to make use of their time within the player's town. All of the hobbies will have many activities that the players will have multiple opportunities to participate in like walking around, collecting fossils, and fishing, but there are also some activities that the players may not be able to do in the game, for example reading and singing. Another thing is that some villagers will change their hobbies multiple times, but in newer Animal Crossing games all the villagers will have only one hobby that can not be changed.
