"Strangers"
"Killing my lonely nights with strangers"
"Hisa!" a voice urges me awake, "Hisa, you're going to be late for school!"
I open my eyes to see my aunt, Gomi, frantically waking me.
"What time is it...?" I groggily let out.
"7:56!"
I jump out of bed at her words, "OH MY GOSH. I'M GOING TO BE LATE."
I walk toward the main stairs to go to my first class.
I hear a boy singing, his voice completely flawless.
Hearing him sing almost makes me forget the reason I'm going up these stairs.
His voice is something I've heard a few times, I've loved and found comfort in it from the start, but I grew to adore it more.
I rush up the stairs to make sure it's real, he's real.
I've never seen his face before, he's always disappeared when I've looked for him.
I continue my way upstairs, hoping to see the boy.
And to my surprise, he's there.
I read his name tag, Lee Heeseung.
"Your singing is amazing," I compliment, attempting not to scare him.
He looks up at me, startled,"Um..thank you," he says, nearly inaudible.
He looks around the empty halls, "Shouldn't you be in class? I don't mean to offend you, but I didn't really expect nor want anyone to hear me. Hence why I waited for class to start," he continued, avoiding eye contact.
I take a step toward him, causing him to look me in the eyes.
He. Is. Beautiful.
I start to panic.
What the heck?! I've never talked to someone this good looking! How do I even act?! Okay. Okay. Breathe.
I hide my blush from Heeseung, and clear my throat.
"I've heard you sing many times on this stairwell, why would you continue if you didn't want people to hear? Why were you crying that time while singing?" His face quickly turns confused.
"I'm new to this school..."
What? But I've heard him before...
"Oh. Sorry. It must've been someone else." I quickly become embarrassed.
"I'm Hisa," I slightly bow at him.
I take a seat next to him, making him, slightly shocked.
"Lee Heeseung," he says simply, and without much emotion.
I nod, "I know," and point to his name tag.
A slight chuckle escapes my lips, "Our names are kind of similar, don't you think?" I nudge him slightly with a bright smile worn in my face.
When he doesn't respond, I continue, "I was new to this district three years ago, so don't stress! I can show you around!"
"Where from?" slowly, he eases into the conversation.
"Japan," I say simply, like he did his name.
I don't mean for there do be a sudden shift in my tone. It just makes me sad sometimes to think about Japan. I left in such a rush to get away from the bad men.
I'm snapped out of my pity party from Heeseung's voice.
"Oh, wow..That's much further than my travel. I'm only coming from a few districts over," he sound more lighthearted than previously when speaking.
I show him a slight smile, fake smile, but he shouldn't need to worry about that.
"Why'd you come all this way from Japan?"
I know he doesn't mean to offend me, and is just making conversation, but I truly don't want to answer the question.
I also despise lying, it never sends well.
I do all that I can; I act like I didn't hear his question.
I continue to stare out the window I've been glancing at every once in a while throughout our conversation.
I take a deep breath before snapping my head at him, "We're late for class, we should go."
He seems a bit shocked at my blunt statement and me ignoring him, but still obeys.
We stand up in sync.
"What's your first class?" he hands me his schedule.
"Follow me, we're in the same class." I say, much less bubbly than I previously was in our conversation.
It's like we switched personalities.
He nods and follows.
"When you walk in, just bow. say you got lost if Mrs. Yu says anything. She's pretty laid back, so you should be fine." He stays silent, and we walk in together.
Luckily for us, the class is still in disorder, so we're able to sneak in unnoticed.
Heeseung walks to the teacher and introduces himself to her before asking where he should sit.
She says something to him, inaudible to me.
I see her point over in my direction, my eyes widen slightly.
My gaze follows Heeseung, along with others, as he walks in my direction.
I hold my breath, the pace of my beating heart quickening.
Just as I think he'll sit next to me, he takes the seat behind me.
The breath I'd been holding in releases.
I involuntarily look back at where he's sitting, since my gaze was already on him.
He smirks at my action, since he realizes I was watching him.
I immediately face forward and cover my blushed cheeks.
He will be the death of me.
