TLDR; your soul constantly tugs to the direction of your soulmate; how could you have known that yours would be the King of Monsters?

2 Person POV
You were sitting on the couch of your living room, tiredly flipping through the channels on the T.V., you almost gave up and just went to sleep, but a certain news article caught your attention.
On the screen was a live feed of the road heading to the top of Mt. Ebott, there were monsters walking down it. That was new, guess that's why they call it the 'news' channel.
You give a light chuckle to yourself before you got a sudden jerk from your soul, it startled you as you grip the couch cushions to steady yourself. Your soul had always been less active than others had described theirs to be. It had always tugged weakly in an aimless direction, but now it had a solid target.
You felt a smile of pure joy and relief grow on your face as your water slightly, you thought you just didn't have a soulmate, or maybe your soul was broken somehow, but no! It was just held back.
You read enough about the history of monsters and humans, you read that there was a magical barrier blocking the monsters from returning, but apparently that barrier was broken now, the magic of the barrier must've been blocking your soul from being able to connect to your soulmates!
You got up, and ran to your room, dressing out of your pajamas and into some of your nicer clothes, touched yourself up a little, then bolted out the door and into your car. You had waited for so long to feel your soul tug like this, you weren't going to wait any longer, you were finding your soulmate even if it was 9pm and you had a workday tomorrow.
Mt. Ebott was a few hours away from your house, so you had to resist the urge to go waaayyy over the speed limit for a little while. Focusing on your soul and where it was trying to pull you was harder than you thought it would when you had to follow the road laws. Anxiously tapping on the steering wheel and bobbing your head slightly to your music was easy though.

Sans POV
Finally feeling the cool breeze of the surface on my face once again was amazing. I let a let out a large sigh and tear up as I finally witness the sun setting on the horizon again. It was almost perfect! I had my brother standing right next to me again, my subjects were free, and I didn't have to kill another child.
Great! Now, all that I wanted to do was get a long-deserved nap. Aaassss soon as we make our way down to a hotel or something. I have to let my subjects rest first; it's been a long trek already just getting to the surface already, I felt a hand on my shoulder, and look over to my brother,
"Brother, you're crying" his voice was as gentle as it's always been,
I quickly reach up and wipe my sockets, sniffing slightly,
"Yeah, well don't let anybody else know that" I mumble with a lighthearted tone,
Papyrus gives a soft laugh, that's something I haven't heard in a very long time.

We stayed around for about 30 minutes before I finally announced we were heading down the road to the nearest human civilization. I heard a lot of groaning from people, and to be honest I internally groaned at myself, but we had to make it to a safer place to take shelter rather than sleeping on a mountain the first day we were on the surface.
