With the help of everyone, we were able to carry all my belongings inside in under an hour. They all of course volunteered to help me unpack but I graciously told them no. It was embarrassing enough having the other three go through all my things, I don't need all eight of them to see my practical shrine of items that are all of them.
We'd all gone out for dinner after the fact, Chris insisting Han and Changbin pick since they lost the bet. Eventually they decided to go to the hotpot restaurant they had been talking about earlier in the car. Not only did Chris pay for everyone, but he forced Changbin and Han to take their money back. The small banter they all three had over it at the restaurant was cute, all of them playfully yelling at one another, not a care in the world of who was around. Lee Know finally stood up, grabbed the money from Chris's hands and shoved it into Changbin and Han's back pocket. He glared at both of them as they each shrank down into their seats, a quiet ' thank you sir' coming from the two of them as Lee Know grinned and walked back over to his seat triumphantly
Once we got back home, everyone talked about different things they were going to be doing. Han, Lee Know, Seungmin, and I.N all decided on a not so friendly game of Mario Kart , to which I could hear their shouts all the way in here. Chris and Changbin decided they still needed to go to the gym even though they practically worked out all day helping me move. Hyunjin went off to his room to work on a new painting, and lastly Felix said he would be in the kitchen if anyone needed him. I used the opportunity to head down the hall to my place and start unpacking.
I sat in the middle of my new living room, going through the box Changbin had marked 'I don't know what this stuff is' . It was full of just random little things, mainly the things I had on my bookshelf or my mantle; knick knacks I guess one would say. In the bottom of the box was a small wooden box, one I hadn't seen in quite some time. "I forgot all about this!" I said excitedly and opened it up. The only thing inside surprised me once I locked onto it, a little, glass wolf figurine looked back at me. I gently picked it up as memories flooded my brain. This was the final gift I got from my childhood best friend. I hadn't thought about him in years, the thought of him always bringing back the worst memory I had of him; the way he left this world.
As I stared at it, I started realizing some scary connections as I felt my heart beat faster and faster in my chest:
Ironically, he loved wolves, always joking that his spirit animal was a wolf and would always draw a small wolf at the end of his name.
Ironically, I loved him far more than a best friend.
Ironically, he asked for my help to show him what it meant to be happy.Ironically, his name was Christopher as well.
The memories of him I tried to keep from my mind started flooding my brain like the floodgates had been busted open. I hadn't thought of him in years, I hadn't seen this wolf in years, I didn't like to be reminded of my failure as his friend.
I had to react quickly to catch the small wolf from falling as it started to slip out of my grasp. I had started crying, not even noticing that I had and the tears fell straight down into the palm of my hand, right where the wolf was.
"It's been almost six years since you've been gone." I said softly, gripping the figurine as if it alone would bring me comfort. I looked at the bottom of and noticed his initials, handwritten in his very custom, sloppy writing. I was one of the few that could always read what he had written and never struggled with it. One final thing clicked in my mind as I ran my thumb over the engraved initials. " CB...... "
