WHEN THE FINAL BELL rang in Carlotta Chan's English class, the words 'SUMMER BREAK' splayed out across the chalkboard in front of her, she hopped out of her seat. Quickly shoving all the books and equipment back into her bag, hearing the other students do the same, she stood behind her desk and waited for the teacher's dismissal so they could finally get out of this hellhole.

Miss Norbury had a warm smile on her face as she leant on the back of her chair. "Well, Juniors, It has been a pleasure teaching you." She smiled. Arlo realised that the teachers looked just as exhausted as them, "For the last time this year," she paused with a quirk of her brow. Arlo's feet tapped against the floor, waiting anxiously, "You are dismissed."

Everybody moved towards the door when she called after them, "Have a good summer's break everyone, you deserve it!" She smiled to herself, moving quickly towards the exit but suddenly, her bag was pulled backwards, her body moving with it.

She spun on her heel, a stern expression on her face, ready to confront whatever asshole was preventing her from leaving.

"You thought you could just leave and not say goodbye?" The girl in front of her said, waving her arms around dramatically.

"Moira, seriously," Arlo chuckled at her friends antics, her anger diffusing, "We're getting on the same bus,"

"I know, Arlo, but i wanted to at least get the chance to talk to you before you're off to... Fairyland."

The "Fairyland" she was referring to was Cousin's Beach.

AKA the best place on Earth.

She didn't bother to correct her, instead slinging an arm over her friend's shoulder as they both marched off to the bus. They navigated around the flurry of students, dodging Martin & Tina giving each other a passionate goodbye kiss. Arlo stuck her tongue out, repulsed, and Moira giggled.

"You know what," She whispered into her ear, "I think it's kind of sweet."

Arlo gave her a weird look.

"Seriously!" She expressed, "You need to get some romance in your life. Are there any hot guys in Fairyland?"

Arlo blanked out, her brain flashing someone's face. "Nope." She lied.

"What about that Conrad dude from last Summer?" She quizzed, eyebrows pinched.

Fuck, Arlo thought.

She gave Moira a death glare. "No." She huffed, "I'm still mad at him. He's been declining my calls all summer. I called him when..." She cleared her throat, changing the subject, "Anyways, he didn't pick up. I don't know what I've done."

They boarded the bus, "Besides, I don't need romance. No boys. Only Belly."

She smiled at my mention of her best friend. I really missed her, she thought.

Grabbing my AirPods out of her pocket, she plugged them into her ears, the soft noise of Taylor Swift's voice drifting through them. Arlo sighed, resting her head on the bus window as thoughts of the upcoming summer filled her mind.

She felt the buses engine rumble and before you knew it, the vehicle was pulling out of the school and back towards home. She closed her eyes, millions of questions filling her mind.

How was I going to confront Conrad? Does Belly still like me? Is Jeremiah going to chuck me into the pool again?

Opening her eyes, silencing all thoughts, she realised that she was extremely excited, a giddy feeling building up in the pit of her stomach.

However, she just didn't know that this summer would change everything she thought she knew.
