Prologue

"You hit her?!" My mother's voice echoed through the house as I sat in my bedroom crying. My father had slapped me across the face, no remorse whatsoever.

My brother Finn entered the room and sat next to me, holding me tightly. I continued to cry as he held me and tried to calm me down. The sound of approaching footsteps caused my head to shoot up and stare at the door.

I thought it was Belly, I had invited her over after everything had happened. Instead, it was my father. "You stupid little bitch! You told your mother! I told you that you weren't allowed to tell anyone that I had hit you!" he screamed in my face, my brother held me closer and tried to pull me as far away from him as possible.

My mother showed up behind him and pulled him back. I finally took in a breath after holding it ever since he entered the room. "Would you stop it Micheal! She has done nothing wrong! You are wrong for hitting her!" my mother yelled in his face. Next thing I know, my mother is on the floor after being slapped.

My brother stood up and pushed my father. He started to yell at him and dodged his attempt to hit him as well. "Really?! You are such an utter disappointment! Hitting your own children and your own wife! What is wrong with you!"

Suddenly, it grew quiet. I had been covering my ears but I could still hear the commotion. "Belly?" I heard Finn's voice. I quickly uncovered my ears and looked up to see Belly in the doorway, mouth open. She gave me a sympathetic look.

I quickly stood up and sprinted towards her and into her arms. I cried even harder than before and looked up to see my father. He looked angry, guilty, and upset all at the same time. "Can we go to your house?" I murmured.

"Yes of course. Finn?" Belly invited him but he refused to leave our mom.

Just a week later I was putting my luggage into Belly's car and hugging my brother and mom. "Are you sure you don't want to join Finn?" Laurel asked.

"I'm sure. I'll stay here with mom, I am the oldest after all. I can handle this better than Faye can." I laughed at his remark and hugged him one last time.

"I love you guys." I said, waving and getting into the car.

"We love you too Faye May!" they both called out. They called me Faye May because my middle name is May. Faylin Mae Sawyer is my full name but they thought Faye May sounded funny so they call me it all the time.

I smiled to myself as we pulled out of the Conklins driveway and down the road. I truly hoped that it would be the best summer yet, but I could only hope.
