BUMP BUMP BUMP! I was jolted awake, by the movement of the train we were currently in. Next to me in Shirley's purse was a tiny mirror. I adjusted myself so I could see my reflection. My blonde fur was all ruffled. I used my paws as best as I could to smooth it out. When I looked at the makeshift collar on me with words I now knew said Betty, I thought about how Shirley had found me and saved me. And how I would be forever grateful.

Memories In Italics...

BOOM. BOOM. BOOM. BOOM. BOOM. I looked around, all of the nearby birds, squirls, bunnies, and other animals that couldn't escape the meadow without being shot by the man when attempting to escape. My tiny body shook. I wanted to run, but I knew I had a bad chance of being shot down. Then I couldn't take it anymore. I ran my eyes closed surely I would be killed. I just knew it. Suddenly I heard a boom, then a voice. Am I dead?

"Stop it!" yelled the voice, "Those are living creatures!" Another boom. Wind rushed by my ears. I heard footsteps. I was too scared to move. I opened my eyes and in front of me was a girl. Around 17 or 18. She picked me up. Her hand was warm.

"Hi baby." She whispered, "You're safe now. I am Shirley. You will be Betty." She plopped me into her red ripped purse. It was the perfect size.

Shirley and I have been together ever since. She has never told me about her family, only that she doesn't have one. I don't know where they went. My family were shot down that day. I still remember what Mami told me. Have faith. Have hope. Have prosperity. Even in the darkest of times. Jeez I miss her soooo much. Papi too. But I am glad that I got to leave that forest. Too much of them lingering everywhere. I don't know where I would be without Shirley. We are inseparable. I need her and I think she needs me too. Even if she doesn't realize it yet.
