Évrard D'Aboville-The Creature

I...shouldn't be telling you this but there are some things, Reader, that you ought to know about us, the ancients. One, not all of us are monsters, demons, night-stalking, flesh-eating creatures of the deep. Nor are we all immortal birds of prey.

Gaius, the conceited twat, is an excellent example to start with. Because unlike me, Gaius is a shifter. Yes, we are not all cursed. Some of us were simple adventurers who ate the last fruits from a withered and oddly shaped tree in a hidden garden and stayed ever hereafter.

Some of us searched out the Macrobians, who for a time held control over the Aqua Vitae. And in some increasingly rare cases, even today, the living water finds one accidentally as it moves wherever it wills. Shifting it's mysterious blessing from one foreign rock spring to the next.

Of course, some of us are made by more traditional methods; a dark blessing, a spellbinding us to this realm, a passing of sacred bloods. In many cases you'll need a host or an enchantress, both of which are in short supply these days.

Yes, there use to be many a way one could be made immortal. And so, there use to be a great many of us ancients in the world before hunters, heroes and bloody Popes thinned our herd.

These days some number us in the hundreds, but, if you consider our adaptability, it is possible that number is much greater. There is only one way forbidden to make an immortal and that is the way humanity considers most natural and sacred.

Upon this point I must impress. Immortals, especially those of different breeds are never to have a child. The power there can be disastrous. One of my many tasks under Sabien was cleaning up such messes. A union of this nature could perpetuate the creation of Gods or something much, much, worse.

I pulled the Porsche into an empty corner of the rural airport hangar. I tapped the dashboard lovingly. I'd miss her while I was gone. Sabien knows how much she means to me. He'd never dare to harm her. I tuck the keys under the driver's seat mat.
