T/W: swearing

AU: Adora never left the horde- they're still training as cadets. (and they're dating)

Catra and adora are both 17 in this AU

Catra's pov:

I walked down the long, cold corridor of the horde's cadet quarters. My ribs ached from laughing so much with Adora, my tail twitching in slight amusement as i remembered the humorous, stupid jokes we had come up with together.  I loved spending time with her- I guess she was kind of my girlfriend? I mean, we hadn't really made it official- but we kissed a lot, and we cuddled, so.. yeah. Girlfriends. I twitched my ears in irritation at the sound of Lonnie's voice.

''Kyle! Rogelio!'' She yelled, running up to them and giving them high fives. They were the other members of our unit. Under shadow weaver's command, they were ALWAYS given the fun jobs, while Adora and I were left behind to do the boring work. Adora had once been shadow weaver's favourite, but after she'd started spending more time with me, she'd grown out of her favour. I'd tried apologising to Adora for causing her to become a reject, but she was having none of it. ''I'd rather hang out with you than those shitheads, anyway!'' She'd said. I still felt guilty, though. If it weren't for me, she'd probably have become a force captain.

Oh well, i thought. We could still get promoted in the future! Even though i knew this was merely wishful thinking, i had to convince myself to be optimistic. I'd go insane, otherwise.

 ''Catra!''

A warmly familiar voice sounded from the training room. Ears perking up, i ran towards it to see a fully geared-out Adora, holding a horde-tech green and grey sword that glinted under the blaring ceiling lights, with a smirk plastered across her face. Beads of sweat formed on her forehead, and she wiped her brow with her wrist, exhaling deeply.

''Had a rough session, eh?'' I chuckled with false confidence. The truth was that i could feel my knees buckling beneath me- she was so hot when she trained. Her blonde ponytail fell over her shoulder messily, and her hair slightly curled around the side of her eyes, bent where she had used to tuck it behind her ears. Her physique was so strong and powerful- she was the embodiment of the perfect human being.

''You wish! I could do this all day.'' she remarked cockily, leaning on her sword just to lose balance and hardly manage to save herself before nearly toppling onto the floor.  ''All day, huh?'' I smirked, looking her up and down with a smug laugh.                                                                            ''Well, MAYBE i could use a little rest.'', she admitted sheepishly, scratching the back of her neck in embarrassment.  I reached out for her hand and led her out of the training room.

She deposited the sword in the weapons box on our way out and let me lead the way, winding down the endless corridors of the fortress. Although this place was a maze of hard, metal walls, we knew our way around.  We had it memorised when we were in our early days in the horde, i believe we were around 6 or seven years old. We would explore and attempt to map out the layout by carving a crude, scratchy diagram into the wall by our bunk-bed. Although the drawing had long since been found and buffed out by Shadow weaver, who hated mine and Adora's games, it had been there long enough to imprint in our minds.

''What do you want to do now?''

We were now sat on Adora's bottom bunk when she asked. Her topaz eyes glimmered as she took my hand, the corner of her mouth stretching into a caring smile.  We were interrupted by the sound of footsteps- Lonnie and Rogelio had burst into the room. She grabbed adora's wrist and tugged her up to stand. ''Come on! We need one more person on sentry so we can sneak up on Kyle, Adora.'' Adora looked back at me, and then Lonnie. Me, Lonnie. She sighed. ''Ok, if it's only for a short while, i dont see why not!'' She grinned at Rogelio and Lonnie, and rushed out of the room, leaving me kneeling down in the middle of the bed. My heart sunk down to my feet and i looked at the now shut door with longing.

Time seemed to slow down for a while. A single droplet rolled down my face and hit the floor, causing an empty noise to echo around the near silent room. I was alone- Adora had left me right when it was getting fun. Why the fuck would she do this to me?

*time skip 2 hours*

''Catraa!'' Adora rushed to where i was sat alone, sulking. I could still feel dried tears on my cheeks- my face probably looked red and puffy as i wiped the last droplets, i hoped, discreetly. ''Lonnie told me you were sad- what happened?'' I looked at Adora, furrowing my brow in disbelief. How could she not realise what she'd done to me?!  ''Leave me alone! Go hang out with your new girlfriend, Lonnie!''

I extended my lower lip in self pity and spun away so that i was no longer facing her.

I felt a slender hand rest on my shoulder. ''Catra, i'm always going to be your girlfriend! I was just helping them out with things. You'll always be my number one, no matter how many people I end up hanging out with. Nothing is going to change! You look out for me, and I look out for you.. I love you, Catra. I love you with all of my heart.'' I could feel my eyes well up at these words. I flattened my ears against my head and leaned foward into Adora's shoulder, scrunching my eyes closed and holding her waist tightly. Looking up at her glittering eyes, I opened my mouth to choke out a single word;

''Promise?''

''Promise.''
