Donny Barrera would much rather be in Florida than back home in Hawkins, Indiana. That was a fact.
Miami was all sandy beaches, piña coladas, and surfing through enormous waves despite the danger, in which the thrill was always present. She belonged there, she thrived in the sun, in the heat, in the sweat that clung to her skin permanently while she basked in the glory of it all. It was not uncomfortable and sticky, it was refreshing, washing them off with sea-salt water and the feeling of the breeze drying you off as you rush back ashore. Donny Barrera loved her life as the girl permanently clothed with two-piece bikinis and sunscreen, a book glued to her hand as she bathes in sunbeam and warmth.
She was a daughter of the sun and far detached from the chill of mundanity, the same kind of lifestyle she was constrained to accept. She had no say in what kind of life she was to be brought upon into this world, but in the presence of clear skies and a glimpse of literal heaven on Earth, she couldn't say she had any right to complain.
This was it, this was what she's hoped to achieve for so long. A life of complete bliss and satisfaction, a world where she could truly belong, where her mind and heart are at ease humming with content. She could have lived a long a life here, not minding that her skin would be bronzed every single waking moment, and be buried beneath the sand that nurtured her love for the ocean and all the mystery it entails. The seas called to her before and in that place, she was home.
However, no matter the way her descriptions of pure and utter utopia could enchant even the most simple minded of fools, vertigo was an expected sensation to how fast this charm immediately fades away from view.
This was how it looked like for poor, poor Donny, though: It was a slow blur, a gradual change in the way Dad is acting around you, especially because he knows exactly how much your life and you yourself has changed for the better after coming here. But then you wake up one day and notice that your family is packing their stuff into ridiculously gigantic luggage and bags. You are hit with a realization, you get whiplash from the absurd notion that anyone in their right mind would want to leave Miami!
So, when you Dad pushes you back into your room and forces you to load your stuff into your baggage labeled "A Bag For When The Impossible Happens And You Have To Leave Miami!", you have no choice but to comply!
Long story short, Donny Barrera would much rather be in Miami, Florida right now. Because, in comparison to the heat that she's grown accustomed to, Hawkins is cold, humid, and sleepy. Especially during Halloween, where sticky little kids would do, say, and wear anything to get their stubby, grimy hands on schmaltzy candies. It was the month of horror and scares in this small town within the clutches of boorish Indiana, and Donny didn't like it one bit.
Even so, if there was one thing Donny Barrera hated more than annoying children, moving away from Miami, douchy assholes ━━ has she mentioned moving away from Miami? ━━ it was having to experience a terribly-written horror movie about inter-dimensional alien dogs attacking a supposedly tedious town come true in real life. And hey, what do you know, her now-detached childhood best friend, with whom she hasn't talked to for a year or so, has even decided to join in on the fun, too.
If this doesn't prove just how much better her life in Miami was, then she doesn't know whether a physical version of board game monsters would suffice as evidence of just about the worst month she could've ever had.

I do not own Stranger Things or any of the characters from that show as they all belong to the Duffer Brothers and Netflix. I only own Donny and the other original characters mentioned above as well as their inclusion to the plot, their backstories, as well as their characterizations. Edit: I forgot to add this warning, I'm so sorry, but there will be lots of mentions of character deaths, abusive parents (mainly because of Donny's mother), sexual assault, trauma, mental illness, homophobia, racism, transphobia, bullying, toxic relationships, a lot of cursing, violence, descriptions of blood and gore, and many, many more mature themes to be discussed. I would try my very best to accurately depict these issues and/or topics in a way that doesn't invalidate those who feel uncomfortable or have experienced these things. If you feel discomfort about any of these, you can leave this book immediately. I'd hate to see you go but I only want what is best for all of my readers.
