Everybody was aware of the risks humans pose to us werewolves. Over centuries, our population dwindled, and today, the only populations of wolves left in the world are the ones in the United States.
I had no idea how we'd lasted for so long, but we did, hidden amongst humankind.
"I mean, really. How did you make it out there? You know, amongst those humans, for two years even!" Mia spoke in whispers to each other.
Eric continued, encircling my shoulders with his hands. "I myself am extremely curious. Are humans as cruel as history makes them out to be?"
"Yea, like with all of their fighting and guns. How does that work, they don't even have packs?"
"It's really not all that." I laughed quietly, shrugging Eric's hand off my shoulders as we found a seat in the cafeteria. "I'm pretty sure only America has a rampant gun problem. Where I lived, gun laws are strict to a tee and the humans I met were... Intriguing?"
"Intruiging?" Mia and Eric question.
"The ones I know are a bunch of idiots who could not possibly do any harm; They're rather enjoyable, I do recommend."
Throughout lunch, we continue our conversation. There were quite a few questions Mia and Eric threw in about humans, but I shrugged them off. My wolf, Doppel, remained silent throughout our entire conversation, occasionally huffing and grunting in her disdain for humanity.
Humans really weren't all that bad. She's just stubborn.
"Hey!-Rude..."
"But like, what made you come back in the middle of senior year? You could've graduated over there and come back to finish your Beta training!"
"I have already graduated, haha." I chuckle, reminiscing about the, now bygone, days of my graduation. "Around early March."
Mia whisper-yelled, "No way, seriously?"
I giggled once again, remembering how stressed I was when I learned that I'd be joining 2 months into the first semester—June—of my Junior year overseas. "Just a scheduling difference. It's not as if I came here earlier of my own volition."
"I guess..." Mia pouted, but it's clear to me that she's glad her best friend is back.
It was then that a faint, familiar smell of something so delectable filled my nostrils. The scent reminded me of the candy shop near my old neighborhood and of a perfume with a summery, sweet and fruity fragrance. The more time I spent trying to find the owner of the sweet scent, the stronger the aroma became. This is till the point where I could've sworn my head started to spin.
It made me anxious, worried...
Afraid? a little, I suppose.
After all, this meant but one thing and one thing only. From the time I learned to read, this single thing was ingrained in my young, naïve mind. My desire for it used to be so intense that I became blindsighted and ignorant of reality because of it.
Never again.
It was a loud thud that made everyone turn their heads. Suddenly, all eyes fell on the figure standing before the cafeteria, a tall, lean boy breathing heavily and panting because of what I could only imagine was endless running, the type I was very familiar with.
This was someone I knew and I did not like it at all. It was all too familiar to me with his dark brown messy hair, sharp features, and dazzling blue eyes. In my head, I heard the howling of my wolf, the swish of her tail in rapid succession, her teeth flashing, and her tongue lashing out in excitement. It was clear from her response as to who he was to me.
