"drew martinez is texting me about you and you're talking about volleyball?" taylor laughed. taylor had been lizzy and belly's best friend for as long as they could remember. just like the fisher's.
they'd been going to their beach house in cousins every single summer since before they, lizzy's twin sister belly, their older brother steven, and her were born. their mom and the fisher boys' mom, susannah, had been best friends forever too.
lizzy and her sister, though twins, we're night and day. belly's hair was dark and she always kept it straight and brushed while lizzy's fake, but always freshly done blonde hair was always unruly. she let her beach waves roam free.
belly and taylor continued talking about boys and volleyball while belly packed. lizzy had only heard the one thing about drew martinez because she'd been walking by. her bags were already in the trunk.
"belly! we're leaving in the next 10 minutes!" laurel park yelled from downstairs. lizzy slipped her head into belly's room, holding onto the door frame. "y'know if you got done now those 10 minutes wouldn't even be needed," she announced, disturbing belly and taylor from a deep talk.
"well, it's actually good you came in here. before i let you two go, you have to tell me your summer wishes. like the one thing you guys want to happen this summer," taylor looked at the two expectantly.
"um, i don't know," belly shrugged, hoping that would work. "you little liar, yes you do. you want a hot makeout with conrad fisher! you want his tongue in your mouth you dirty little slut!" taylor teased, causing lizzy to smirk silently.
"and don't think you're safe liz! you want jeremy to take you down to a secluded area in the beach to do the most unholy things!"
"it's jeremiah!" lizzy and belly corrected in unison.
"i'm just saying, belly. you've been in love with him since we were 12! and lizzy you've been infatuated with jeremiah quite literally your whole life! we all know! every picture i've seen, everyone i've asked has told me the same thing, you're in love with jeremiah fisher."
"okay, a) that's disgusting, and b) it doesn't matter what i do he doesn't see me that way," belly mumbled.
"oh he'll see you. whether he wants to or not. you look a lot different than last summer belly," taylor smiled, looking over toward the other conklin twin.
"okay! you got me," lizzy threw her hands up. "i'll tell him."
⁂
"-i feel the tension in the air! no i can't let you leave so i kill my insecurities!" belly sang loudly, steven, laurel, and lizzy all looking at her weirdly.
"can you guys turn it down a little..? please," laurel finally spoke up.
"yes, please!"
"belly, you were so off key."
"i want you three to be better about helping out this summer. like, don't just leave your dishes in the sink. load them into the dishwasher. and not just your own dish either, steven."
"i-"
"i want you to be good houseguests,"
"mom, susannah has people who clean, doesn't she?" steven asked from the driver's seat. earning a slap on the side of his head from laurel and a dramatic gasp from lizzy.
"i just want you three to be considerate and act like i raised you right. steven that means don't stay out too late."
"mom! i'm too old for a curfew!" the boy whined. "wait, what about me? i don't have a curfew either, right?" belly spoke up.
"what do you need a curfew for? you don't go anywhere?"
"don't be a jackass, steven!"
"wait, mom, why isn't lizzy's curfew being discussed?" belly asked.
"because lizzy goes wherever jeremiah goes. and i trust him to keep her safe and bring her home at a reasonable time." laurel verified, causing the girl next to her to blush.
⁂
pulling up to a gas station, belly, laurel, and lizzy all went inside to grab a snack.
belly grabbed cheetos and reese's, immediately opening the chips and stuffing her face. lizzy grabbed a pepsi and headed toward the cashier, grabbing belly's open chip bag and candy.
"hey," the clerk said, looking at the girls hungrily. "are you girls new this summer?"
"no," belly blushed while lizzy rested her head in her hands, bored out of her mind ignoring the boy. "really? i thought i knew every pretty girl in cousins." the boy flirted.
"oh, lord," lizzy mumbled under her breath. "coming to the bonfire tonight? first of the summer,"
"jesus, she's busy, probably won't, i'm going. can we please get this over with?" lizzy snapped. "maybe, sorry" belly mouthed.
"after we get settled do you want to go to whale of a tale with me so i can pre-sign stock before the signing tomorrow night?" laurel walked up asking belly. "remember, you used to sit on my lap when i did my signings there? you insisted on drawing a little whale on every book i signed."
"no, i- i don't remember that," belly flushed. "i'll make you a deal. i'll let you pick out tonight's dessert if you come with me and keep me company,"
"i'll see you later," the clerk winked.
"what's later?"
"bonfire."
"nothing."
⁂
in the car, belly took her hair out of its high ponytail and applied tinted chapstick. lizzy rested her head against the window and closed her eyes.
pulling into the driveway, steven honked twice, waking lizzy and exciting susannah. "they're here!" the blonde woman yelled.
jeremiah was the first to exit the house as he was the youngest and probably the most excited. "what's up!" he exclaimed.
"hi, oh my gosh!" laurel opened her arms and hugged the boy. after laurel, jeremiah went to steven. susannah came running out of the house and into laurel's arms.
"look who came back all grown up!" jeremiah gasped when he saw belly, she really had changed since last summer. "put me down!" she yelled after jeremiah spun her around.
"jere, jere, jere, jere, jere! come over here!" steven waved the boy over. "yeah, one sec. where's my favorite conklin?" he asked, spotting her in the backseat and rushing over. he swung the door open and grabbed the girl from the car, yanking her into his arms.
"ELIZABETH FISHE- CONKLIN!" he screamed. "JEREMIAH FISHER!" she screamed back, wrapping her arms and legs around him as he held her tightly.
"i missed you so much, jere."
"you look so hot, liz."
though he was serious, lizzy believed he was joking and she wished he hadn't been.
