She had a big smile on her face as she took the lift up to Mr. Ricciardo's apartment. She had just got a call from another F1 driver that he wanted to hire her to clean his apartment every Tuesday. She was over the moon happy, she figured Daniel must've put in a good word for her.
As she walked into the foyer of his apartment, she was surprised to see Daniel. He had told her he wouldn't be coming back to Monaco before his next race. "Hey Mr. Ricciardo!" she greeted him, before noticing how upset he looked.
"Is everything ok?" she asked him as she set her things down. She had watched the race last weekend and he finished P4 so he couldn't have been too upset from that. She knew he wasn't dating anyone so it couldn't be a broken heart.
"I told you to call me Daniel" he sighed. She had been his housekeeper for the last 6 years. He reminded her every time to stop being so formal, but he was her only client and it just didn't feel professional to do so. Only in her head did she use his first name. "You're only a few years younger than me," he continued.
"Sorry" she smiled apologetically. "What's going on though, you said you wouldn't be back before the next race" she questioned him, not that it was any of her business. Whenever he happened to be home on her cleaning day they would talk. Over the years you could say they became friends, in a way. But she still respected that he was her boss at the end of the day.
"Why did Lando thank me for lending you to him on Tuesdays?" He asked her point blank. She could see he looked hurt, but she still didn't understand. She looked at him confusedly as they walked into the kitchen so she could talk as she started her work.
"Uh well he just hired me as his housekeeper. I'm gonna do his place on Tuesdays," she furrowed her brows at him as she started to load the dishwasher. He just stood there and stared at her so she stopped what she was doing to look at him.
"But you're my housekeeper..." he looked at her quizzically.
"Yes and now I'm Lando's too" She chuckled at him. "Is everything ok?" She was starting to get worried. He still hadn't told her why he was back and she was getting concerned that someone had died.
He hesitated before speaking again, formulating his words in his head. "You can't be both our housekeeper" he said very serious.
Her eyebrows rose in shock. She wasn't sure if he was commanding her or if he just didn't understand, so she decided to explain in a lighthearted way. "That's how the job works though, you think every housekeeper just has 1 client? I'm one of very few in Monaco that does" she finished and started the dishwasher so she could move onto her next task. "Do you need me to wash anything specific first?" she asked him as she walked into his bedroom and started to sort through the dirty laundry from his suitcase.
"Why are you doing this?" he asked quietly as he gently touched her shoulder to get her attention. She hadn't realised how closely he had followed her.
"I... don't understand. This is what I always do?" she was so confused as she gestured towards the clothes.
He shook his head, indicating he wasn't referring to the laundry. "Is it because I don't pay you enough? I'll give you a raise, just tell me how much" he said in a pleading tone, taking her hands into his.
"What??" she was in disbelief. He already paid her extremely well, she couldn't even imagine him giving her more. "No no I just need to build a clientele, that's all. It's nothing to do with my salary or with you".
"But why do you even need other clients? I've been your only client the last 6 years and you've been fine with that haven't you?"
"Yes! Yes of course I have but... you're not gonna need me here forever ya know." she couldn't believe she was even needing to have this conversation with him. He knew how the job works. He knew he wouldn't be racing much longer and he wouldn't need her here in his way all the time. Right?
As she saw his brows furrow in confusion she realized that maybe he, in fact, didn't know. "When you settle down and have a family you won't want a housekeeper always around in the way" she clarified.
"You could never be in the way" he countered, sitting down on the edge of the bed as if her words had just slapped him in the face.
"Daniel, this is the way the job works. If you really want me to stay, I will. But I will still be taking on new clients" she said as she sat down next to him, placing her hand atop his.
He was silent for a moment, looking down at their hands. "You called me Daniel" he replied in disbelief before lifting his head back up to smile at her.
She couldn't stop a small smile from forming on her lips as she replied "I did".
They sat there for a few moments. "Are you ok now? You gonna tell me why you came home this week? Surely it wasn't just to ask me about this" she laughed as she stood back up and continued sorting throught the clothes.
He stayed silent which prompted her to look at him. He looked nervous.
"You didn't..." she said in disbelief. He shyly looked at her and nodded. "Oh my god, you could've just texted me you know" she said.
"I just always thought you'd be here for me. I've always been able to count on you. I thought I was losing you" he looked so dejected. It broke her heart.
"Oh Dan..." she didn't know what to say. He was her boss but she never realized how much she meant to him. She sighed. "Look, you're not losing me. I'm not going anywhere".
He stood up and looked into her eyes, gently cupping her cheek. "But I don't want to share you" his eyes pleading with hers. If anyone was to overhear this conversation or even look at them right now, they'd think something else was going on. It was really catching her off guard. They never spoke like this. It was intimate. But she could tell he was being serious.
"You won't even miss me when I'm at Lando's because I'm never here on Tuesdays anyway" she smiled at him gently, hoping it would comfort him.
"Promise?" he asked deparately.
She nodded, placing her hand on top of his to comfort him. "Are you sure nothing else is going on?" she had to ask. He was acting so different.
"Yeah, everything's fine" he replied unconvincingly before pulling her into a hug that lasted maybe a second longer than normal. Then he walked out of the room. She shook her head to try and shake the confusion loose of what just happened as she continued to do her work.
Meanwhile, Daniel walked back into the kitchen to get some water. He smiled to himself, ecstatic that he wasn't losing his housekeeper. And it was only then that he realized why the thought of losing her was so upsetting to him: he was in love with her.
