LEGACIES 00:
PILOT EPISODE

"GO, GREASED LIIIIGHTNIN, you're burnin up the quarter miiiile", Stefan Salvatore sang obnoxiously as he bounced the giggling toddler in his arms, her tiny feet just barely strong enough to help keep her upright. "Gooo, greased lightnin, you're coasting through the heat up trials. You are supreme", he called dramatically, causing the baby to do a dramatic little shimmy, "the chicks'll cream for greased lightniiin."

"Stefan, put my baby down", Klaus Mikaelson sighed as he entered the all but ancient room that the two were currently occupying. There weren't many places that vampires could go to be safe lately. "She looks annoyed." Klaus would argue that the baby already had his mannerisms. She looked a lot like her mother, but her attitude was all him already.

"She's having the time of her life, look at her", Stefan protested, holding the small child up so that her father could see their identical sunglasses, his daughter's smiling face. Stefan loved being around children. It was one of the few times he felt relaxed and at peace. Children had no expectations of him, they just were. How he longed to be able to just be.

Klaus snorted. His friendship with Stefan ran long and deep. Not because Stefan had once loved his youngest sister, but because, when Elijah and Kol were lost to him, Stefan filled a void that he didn't know he had, and Klaus did the same for him. The void of having a brother. Whether or not either of them wanted to admit it, they had been like two peas in a pod back then.

"I had forgotten what it was like to have a brother. Thank you."

"Come take a picture of me and my brother."

"Bonnie isn't going to like you turning the miracle baby into a mini Stefan", Klaus said instead, hiding his amused smile. He was always going to be happy to see Stefan, no matter what. They may not always see eye to eye, but they were still close. "I know why you're spending so much time here, Stefan", Klaus sighed, his tone gentle. He was concerned, to say the least. Avoiding one's own home was never a good sign, and he should know.

"And why is that?", Stefan asked, feigning naivety.

"Your marriage with Caroline is failing, though that was mere destiny", Klaus shrugged. "You had years to pursue Caroline. You didn't think twice about her until she was your only option. Your marriage was one of convenience, in each other you found what you both craved so much: acceptance, a family. But now, she's carrying Alaric Saltzman's hellspawn, and you're having a baby with another woman who you might be in love with. What you once sought in each other had been truly found in others. There is no more loneliness. So I guess the only real question is why? Why run here instead of accepting the end?" Klaus knew Stefan's struggle better than anyone. He lived many years in denial, clinging onto what once was.

"Caroline refuses to hear it, and I want her to be happy. As long as she is willing to try to save us, then I owe that to her", Stefan answered simply. The way he saw it, Caroline's happiness was in his hands until she stated otherwise. He felt the need to care for it, as if it were a sentient being. He nurtured and cared for it as if it were a child, born from their darkest moments and brought up in a cruel world where it could barely stand on its own two feet. He refused to leave it until it could stand, proudly, on its own. Caroline had always been a close friend. He longed for her happiness, even if it meant putting his own on hold, if only for the time being. Their lives, all of their lives, had been so messy and chaotic... They deserved to find happiness in a way that was peaceful for them.
