Militia with Malicious Intent

Across the table sits a man with a disappointed flat expression, papers litter everywhere there wasn't a plate or glass. Unbearably tense was the only was the atmosphere could be described and it had been like this for at least an hour. Y/N's father, the man sitting arms crossed with papers of various political topics in front of him, once again had tried to convince them to drop all carrier plans to fulfill his selfish desires. Y/N would have none of it, neither of them spoke a word to each other, the each already knew what the other was thinking and if either were to speak then the only thing they would hear was shouting.

Instead, Y/N's father watched them finish eating. He watched them stand up without saying a word to him. He watched them take their empty plate to the kitchen and he watched them disappear behind the doorway to the hall. Y/N's father did nothing to stop them or reason with them, he believed fully that Y/N would come around to the idea of enlisting in the Fatui. However, he didn't want it for the benefit of Snezhnaya or to make Y/N stronger, he wanted more protection for himself and the possibility of having more control over something made him drunk.

In the coming morning all Y/N felt in their mouth was the familiar acidic taste of bile, they turned onto their side only to be greeted by pain bruising their stomach. Today would be the first day they properly attended school, Y/N pushed themselves up from the bed and reminded themself of every negative thing they only wanted to forget. Sitting on the foot of the bed was a bookbag and the school uniform Y/N set out the night before, and it was quiet. Y/N's father had already left for work, they presumed. Silence, sitting, staring. numb moments of quiet limbo before an alarm shouted loudly from the bedside table, startling Y/N. If Y/N wasn't awake before, they most definitely were now, begrudgingly climbing out of bed and dressing for school.

"Welcome class, we have another transfer student joining us today. If you would introduce yourself for the class?"

Y/N's homeroom teacher motioned to them, and they looked to the familiar blonde who sat in the middle left of the room for guidance. Introductions were never Y/N's thing, and they nearly froze up from all of the eyes staring them down, speaking up as whispers started among the students.

"Y/N. Transfer from Shnezhnaya for family business." was the only information Y/N offered about themselves before nodding and taking a seat in an empty chair closer to the back right of the class. The rest of the students begin whispering to each other again, a small group gathered around Lumine, and Y/N could hear the occasional mention of the ever-omnipresent Fatui mixed with what Y/N swore was their social media tag. It wasn't long before the class was silenced by the teacher and work was handed out to the class, uneventful was the only way to describe how Y/N spent the class time. Drawing in-between their notes and staring out the window to see only a small garden of flowers managed by the school gardening club.

Once the bell had rang, Lumine appeared over Y/N's shoulder with two other girls, one brunette and the other lavender in hair color. Amber and Keqing introduced themselves respectively, the three of them seemed like close friends and offered Y/N a table at lunch. Accepting and trying to be nice only to please the group and the four of them split off to their next class.

Y/N's next classes were all uneventful, as many school days are, save for the murmuring surrounding them. More than a few times, students approached Y/N to ask about the Fatui. More than a few times, Y/N had hidden in a bathroom or arrived late to class already off to a distasteful beginning to the school year. Lumine and Amber stood with Y/N outside of their last class before lunch, Y/N already drained beyond belief.

"Y/N, you seem upset- do you want to talk about what happened?" the brunette pried at Y/N, ignoring the distant and unwilling eyes staring at them. Today felt mechanical, mundane, how was Y/N to respond? They wanted nothing other than to brush the two girls away and get class over with, not noticing the warm pricks at the edges of their eyes. Lumine then butted in.

"Y/N... how about you follow us? don't worry about skipping class, I want to show you something"

The girls voice sounded sympathetic, not to say Amber's didn't but it sounded different. Without letting them answer, Lumine took Y/N by the wrist and disappeared with them behind a corner in the hallway, taking them under the stairs with Amber tailing behind at a distance. "everyone's been talking about the Fatui more after you appeared, Y/N. why's that?" Amber's voice sounded rhetorical. Heat filled the air; it was evident this school had something against Shnezhnaya's military. Y/N hadn't looked at the news, but they didn't need to when Lumine spoke.

"You think any kind of job outside of the Fatui relocate entire families? They bring nothing but death everywhere they go." Lumine spoke with a sickening sugar-coated voice. "First in Mondstadt, then Liyue and Inazuma. I'm shocked we haven't gone to war yet! and then you show up and I catch wind that the Fatui are being stationed here now?"

"Back off. I have no involvement with the Fatui, and just because I'm from Shnezhnaya doesn't dictate that." Y/N made a weak defense for themself, trying to push past the two girls. Y/N was shaking near visibly now, already bad anxiety turning into a panic attack by the time they reached the bathroom. Cold tile floors welcomed hot tears that Y/N ignored as they bore holes into the ground with their eyes. What was this? what the fuck was happening? They felt so lost and so out of it they didn't even notice the notifications building on their phone until their phone rang out. Their father ended up leaving a voicemail that Y/N ignored until after school was over.

Sitting in the parking lot outside of the school, Y/N listened to the voicemail. "I'm signing you up for the Cincin Mage unit when you get home. I have already gotten your mother to sign off on it and the beginning of your practice using the cincins won't interfere with classes." Father's voice was not what they wanted to hear. of course, he wouldn't try to convince Y/N to join, he'd just force them too instead. he believed Y/N would come around by having no choice in the matter and that's exactly what he was doing.
