story start

Nightmare and a few others watched, sat upon a checkered blanket under a large tree on a hill as a small girl and horror ran through a field of gold, a small round sun hat decorated with little mushrooms sat on top of their head. Her outfit was a short black dress decorated with golden stars, suns and moons, her shoes a pair of black mary janes.

A large smile plastered on her face.

"Oh.. Oh.. I'm not... moving so well at the moment.." she weakly spoke."Would you like something to eat?" Nightmare asked."I'm.. Ah... I.." The girl took a brief pause and decided to say nothing. She wouldn't have any time to think and continue her story, she didn't want to break the thread of the past either."I'm sorry..." She said softly to Nightmare."It's ok, but..." Nightmare couldn't finish his sentence, he felt something stirring inside of him. He felt like grabbing the girl, holding her close and whispering a million things into her ear, but he couldn't. He just held her there. The girl just sat there, her eyes slowly closing in the cold, still night."I know, I know..." A dull tear rolled down her cheek. "I just.. I miss.. My mom so much.. She always listened to me... and wanted to see my happily... But... I know that she..""I.." Nightmare whispered, an unusual pain coursing through his chest. "I..."He couldn't say anything else, the pain inside of him was unbearable, it was like fire was burning his heart, like he was dying slowly. He had this sudden feeling that something was going to happen to him, and that he wouldn't wake up tomorrow."You know Nightmare," the girl spoke suddenly and her voice shook, her dry throat making it sound like she was about to cry. "I saw the new girl, I saw her. She was talking with her parents... and she didn't look too happy. I just kept watching from the corner of my eye..." The girl coughed and a few sputtering noises left her lips. "She didn't... Look to happy. But, it was..""..""..On... This is... Nightmare."The girl smiled. Her sad expression melted away, her eyes glowed. The moonlight danced around her lips."She wasn't smiling anymore, but she looked like she was trying...""Yeah." Nightmare took a moment to catch his breath. "Yeah..."The girl took a deep breath."I tried to tell my dad.""It was useless," Nightmare whispered, staring down into the gushing wounds. "I tried to explain, I tried so hard, but I just..."He wiped away some of his tears and looked the girl in the eye."But I was too late."A small wind started to blow and the girl's golden star hat slipped off of her head, blowing to the ground behind her. She reached around, the wind pushing against her as she put it back on."I just couldn't talk..." The girl closed her eyes."I just..."The girl didn't speak for a while, she just sat there in her gabardine dress, hands clasped in her lap."Do you know what you're name is?" Nightmare asked her."My name?""Yeah, you know, your real name?""Yeah... I have a name.""Can you tell me?""I can, but I won't.""You wouldn't? Why?""I don't think you're good for me.""You're not good for me either.""I'm better than you, Nightmare. And I just don't want you around me." The girl turned to him, her golden eyes cold, but her face was soft."Then why did you keep coming back?"The girl didn't say anything, her shoulders shaking slightly."When I killed that person, I said that I wouldn't come back. I just wanted to... go on. To move on. I was a bad person back then... but I was young. Now, I'm older. And I think I know better."The girl finally looked at Nightmare, the corners of her mouth turning up slightly."Can you come back with me?"The girl stood up, the wind roaring around her, her hair streaming back into place. Her hand twitched."Would you?""Do I have a choice?" Nightmare sighed. He pushed his beanie up onto his head, and knelt down, resting his hands on his knees."That would be a no.""Then I guess that's that." The girl walked towards him."So, I guess that was the plan all along? To see if I could escape?" Nightmare stared at the ground."I suppose so."The girl stopped, and her face grew sad."You're leaving me, aren't you?""No, I just need some time to think.""And how long do you need to think? You've just told me that you're leaving, for... forever. What makes you think that you can think of something that would make me stay?" The girl's eyes were slightly distant."Maybe you can't?""I guess not. I wish that I could help you.""Oh, well. At least you tried."Nightmare looked up."How long do I have to think?""I'll come find you in a few weeks," she said. "You should probably pack up.""I didn't have much to start with.""I know, but you'll need your things.""It doesn't even matter if I stay in that rundown farmhouse or not."The girl's eyes twitched."It matters to me. You're going to need a place to live and stuff like that, so I thought I would take you in.""You took me in once, remember? I'm not going to take advantage of you.""But I'm not trying to take advantage of you. You're going to stay here with me, in my farmhouse. If you want to leave then we can go. I won't stop you.""But you said that you weren't trying to take advantage of me."The girl sighed, running her hand through her hair."I guess I changed my mind."The girl began to walk towards him."Well, don't come back for a while. You've been back to that place before. I don't like it, it scares me.""You're the one that's scared, Nightmare.""Just... go away. Just don't come back.""Yeah, right. As if."The girl began to walk away."Look, just promise me one thing. Promise me that you won't leave.""Why would I do that?""Because I can't do this on my own."Nightmare waited, staring at the girl's back, his face stern."Just promise me that you won't leave.""Fine, I won't leave.""That's all I ask."The girl turned back around. She sighed."Fine."Nightmare relaxed, but his body tensed again."And I mean it. Promise me.""I promise," Nightmare whispered, his voice soft."Good. That's all I needed. Now get out.""Okay."The girl slowly walked back to the door, and opened it. She turned back, and Nightmare's face grew tense."Don't come back for a long time. If you do I will hunt you down, and you will regret it."The girl closed the door.Nightmare stood, staring at the door for a moment, then he turned, and started to leave.~~~
