The Beginning - [Prologue]

“Chris, we should leave,” I whispered, grabbing him by the hand. Chris constantly ran his mouth twenty-four seven, day and night but right now, if we were gonna make it out of here alive, he needed to shut up. Chris dropped his bookbag and pushed me out of the way. “Nah Ki, these niggas think I’m pussy. Fuck that running shit. I’m right here now, what y’all gon’ do?” Black gave one snap of the fingers and within a matter of seconds; his boys were jumping on Chris, hitting him from every angle. I jumped in, punching one of the guys in the face but I was quickly swept off of my feet and held against the wall. I kicked, scratched and screamed but nothing worked. He had me on lock. “Get off of him!” I screamed, tears running down my face. “Shut the fuck up. Yo’ boy here think he tough right?” Black said, a cynical grin plastered on his face. He put his hand on the bottom of his shirt and slowly raised it, revealing a loaded 9mm pistol. I jumped, turning my head because I didn’t want to see what was going to happen next. Chris sat up, blood streaming from his mouth. “Nigga, fuck you!” The guy who was holding me grabbed my chin and forced me to witness what was about to happen. I screamed and Black smiled, an evil light of joy flashing in his eyes. “You should’ve stayed in school, kid. These streets ain’t for everybody.”

And that was it. That’s how it all happened. That’s how I lost my best friend. I’ll never forget that day because that was the day everything changed. Before that, we were all just a bunch of kids who just graduated from highschool and didn’t take anything seriously because life was all about having fun but after that day, shit got real. Really real.

I wiped the last tear from my face and grabbed my black Michael Kors clutch. Today was the final goodbye. Today was the beginning of the rest of my life without my best friend. I was not ready for this shit.
