Snap Out Of It - [Chapter 1]
“Christopher Rashaun Hill will always be remembered for his caring personality, charming smile and just his all-around presence. Whenever he came into a room, it immediately lit up. Chris, as everyone called him, just had a way of making people feel good.” He continued talking but I just drifted off into my own world, remembering various things about Chris. I remember the time Jamari and I broke up and Chris was my shoulder to cry on. I remember when he snuck into my house and woke me up at exactly twelve o’clock just to say happy birthday. I remember how heartbroken he was when he found out his mom was doing drugs. I remember how sad he felt when his little sister got pregnant. Chris had a hard life but no one but me had ever seen him down. To see him frown was to him, a weakness. I’m really gonna miss him.
“And now a few words from some of Christopher’s friends.”
I hated that. I hated that shit with a passion. Chris only had one friend and that was me. Chris never once asked for help but everybody knew what he was going through. They may not have been able to see it on his face but they knew. When shit got tough, all they asses left and who was there to support Chris? Me. Not them. I sat there with an annoyed look on my face because I was obviously pissed. Lamari leaned over and whispered in my ear, “Damn, I know it’s a funeral but don’t look so mad. You ain’t the one who dead.”
“Lamari please just leave me alone right now. I’m really not in the mood to embarrass yo’ ass.” I replied, slightly pushing him away from me.
Lamari was my boyfriend of two years. Well, I guess if you really calculate all of the time that we had actually been dating, then it would only add up to about a year because we had been on and off. I met him when I was 15 at this party my girl Mikyla was throwing. He was in the corner with his friends, drinking on some shit. He was fine as hell with his deep dimples and low-cut jet black hair. I approached him first and we had started talking. Everything was going good in our relationship until he cheated about a year and a half ago. Ever since then, our shit has been rocky. We argue a lot more and we both do hella stupid shit but at the end of the day, I know this nigga got my back and I have his.
“Damn, ok. My bad.” He turned around in his seat and continued listening to Jayelle as she spoke. She finished her speech and then just burst out crying.
Damn, this was gonna be a long day.

A week had passed since Chris’ funeral and I literally think that I’m clinically depressed. I miss that nigga so much. He would tease me so bad right now if he saw me crying like this but he ain’t even here to do that. Damn. I turn on the tv, trying anything to get my mind off of Christopher. My phone begins to vibrate and so I look at the screen, reading the text.
Lamari - Wassup? You okay? I called u earlier bt u aint answer. Lmk wassup, k? Imy.
I'll reply to him later. “Kierra, get the door!” I hear my 19 year old older brother, Kameron, yell from his comfortable position on the couch. Damn, he don’t do shit. I get up and walk down the stairs, pulling my black hair up into a messy bun as I do so. I open the door and see Jayelle standing there, holding a bag of Dunkin’ Donuts in her hand.
“Now you know I don’t eat donuts.”
She gave me a look of disgust. “That’s why it ain’t for you. Where you been? Yo’ ass been M.I.A, I had to make sure you was still breathing.” She moved me out of the way and headed upstairs, checking out Kam from the side of her eyes.
“Stop! What did I tell you? My brother is off limits!”
“I know, I know,” She began, dragging out the words, “but he’s just so damn sexy. I could just wrap him up and love on him forever and three Christmases.”
