Svetlana's POV:
"Come on my lady push! One more time, your baby's almost here!" The midwives have been saying this to me over and over but my baby still hasn't come. Stubborn. The elders say it is the sign of a boy. Maybe my baby will be a boy and I can give my Beloved Argus the son he's always wanted. "Come on Svetlana, just once more!" my truest friend Lena says from beside me as she squeezes my hand. My whole body hurts so bad and I just want to close my eyes and sleep, but for my baby's sake, I push one more time. Then I hear it. A tiny little voice crying out. "It's a girl!" The midwife says as she hands me my baby. I want to feel happy as I hold her in my arms, but something doesn't feel right. It's as if my body has no strength to go on. "Oh Svetlana, she's perfect! Have you a name for her?" I hear Lena say but I'm too tired to answer her. The pain is worse now and I struggle to stay awake. Suddenly a maid is at my bedside, taking my baby from me. "Svetlana, are you okay?" Lenas worried eyes search my face. Now there are maids running in and out of the chamber, some tending to the baby, others trying to keep me awake, the midwife says something and Lena starts to cry. Then I know. I know I'm not going to hold my baby again, or sing her to sleep, or hear her say her vows. My time has come to an end. I reach out and take Lenas hand, "Her name is Kolia." I say with tears in my eyes. She just nods as she chokes back a sob. I want to hold my baby again one more time, so the maids bring her to me and as I smell her hair and kiss her tiny soft cheeks, I know that she is going to be great. "I love you." I whisper into her tiny little ear.
And then my eyes close and sleep comes.
