"I can't wait for you to meet her," Jackson grinned as he took a sharp left turn. I eyed the speedometer with amusement as I noticed how fast we were going. Jackson really must have been excited, because he never exceeded the speed limit. Actually, up until this point I had believed he was incapable of breaking a rule.
The 'her' he was talking about was his girlfriend. Well, for lack of a better word I'd call her his girlfriend. They hadn't seen each other in four months. Their entire relationship consisted of two glorious weeks while Jackson was on a trip, and a various amount of Skype calls and text messaging since he'd returned. Jackson had met Simone when he attended the same brainiac pre-med camp he did every spring break. She was a waitress at the hotel restaurant, where Jackson spent a lot of his time studying. They apparently got to talking and she'd confessed to him that she'd dropped out of high school and was now struggling with her GED. Of course, Jackson being himself, he offered to tutor her. During those two weeks of late night study sessions, they fell in love. Blah, blah freaking blah.
The whole story reeked of a cliché chick flick to me. But, who was I to judge? If Jackson was happy... well then whatever.
I'd heard the story about twenty five times by now, so maybe the magic had just worn off for me. Because I seemed to be in the minority, everyone else loved it. Especially the girls... oh the girls. Jackson told them all. The cute waitress we had, a bunch of girls from our gym class, and even my cousin. They all awed and gushed about how adorable it was. It was the most romantic thing they'd ever heard, of course. Now, I had suggested he use the story to get laid. But apparently that meant I was missing the beauty of it.
We were actually on our way to pick Simone up from the airport. Jackson's parents were both doctors, making his family quite wealthy. They'd agreed to pay for Simone's flight down and let her stay in one of their many guest rooms. As long as Jackson kept up with his part time job at the hospital.
At this point, I had never even laid eyes on as much as a picture of Simone. She didn't have Facebook - which I'll admit made me question her a little - and Jackson had never let me in our there Skype chats. I thought it was kind of suspicious. If she was as hot as he said, I'd be bragging up a storm. I guess Jackson and I were just different that way.
I honestly felt bad saying I wasn't expecting much from Simone because Jackson is my best friend and all, but I wasn't... He had just never been good with girls. That was my speciality, I charmed them while Jackson always got friend zoned because he was just so nice.
Jackson was still babbling on about how thrilled he was and all the plans he had for them.
"Whoa," I interrupted, suddenly alert to what he was saying. "You're not forgetting about baseball today are you?"
Jackson made a face. "C'mon, Wes, it's her first day. I doubt she's going to want to spend it watching a dumb baseball game. We haven't seen each other in four months." He slowed down the car as we found ourselves in a sudden unexplained traffic jam.
"It's the first game!" I countered. "You're our pitcher. We can't exactly play without you. It's in four hours, that's not enough time to find a replacement!" I huffed, rolling down my window. "Plus, maybe Simone likes sports. Some girls do, you know." I added as a weak final attempt.
A sly smile formed on Jackson's face as he cocked his eyebrows. "Like Sophia?"
"Okay, that's not fair." I smirked back. "You know Sophia doesn't like anything." That reminded me that I hadn't responded to her earlier text. I wiggled around so I could fish my phone from my pocket and eventually saw that she'd texted me two more times since. Wessss whennnn are you coming babbbbe. And my parents get back in twoooo daysss. I hated when she called me 'babe' and the fact that she had to add about 25 pointless extra letters.
