                                                     Surprise Visit

                                                        Annabeth

"Annabeth..."

After two weeks of nightmares, memories, and little voices huanting me, you would think that hearing a voice while on night duty would be nothing.

But this was no dream, voice, or thought. This was real.

But I wasn't willing to believe that it was him, so I hardened, "Next time you mimic him," I said to the voice, "I'll kill you."

The voice didn't believe me.

"Annab-"

I swirled around and put my dagger to his neck before he could finish my name. "Did you not-," my voice flattered when I looked into his deep green eyes.

I felt like the air had been sucked out of me and been replaced with all of my pain and anger (which was a lot.) Looking at him just addded to it. Finally, it just boiled over the top and I began to sob, letting out all of my feelings with tears.

But it was when he put his arms around me that I broke, "Gaea!" I shouted into the darkness of the night ripping away from him. "It's torture enough having him gone! Stop teasing me with lies!"

I turned around and looked at him, and he just stood there, his dark hair blowing into his face, as if waiting to be called "Guilty."

'What's different about you?' I thought. Same green eyes, voice, personality, but he was solid, not a ghost.

"Who--What are you?" I asked him.

"What?" he asked, genuinely confused. The way he cocked his head and raised his eyebrows was the same.

"You're dead," I told him, although I was more trying to convince myself. "Go back where you came from." It hurt to send him away, but I couldn't stand the false hope of him being here.

"I'm not dead." He countered, pinching his arm, just to make sure. "I am very much alive."

He's a sore loser.

"No," I shook my head. "I promise you're dead."

"I am not."

"Have you ever won an argument against me?" That should've shut him up.

"Well, no. But how do you know that I'm dead?"

The air seemed to drop 20 degrees, as if the world was waiting for me to say it. "I just do, ok?" Iied. "It's been hard enough having you die, but why keep coming back?"

At this time, my thoughts were blurry with flashbacks of that night, so I almost didn't hear him say,"To be with you, duh. Do you not want me back?"

"No," my voice cracked so the word was two syllables instead of one. "Because you're a dead, I can't date a ghost."

I couldn't look at him because I didn't want to see what his what his reaction would be.

"You know," he started, "I completely understand that. I wouldn't want to date a ghost, either."

My heart warmed to hear him be so sweet, even while I had been so bitter.

"But I'm not dead." There's the sour to that sweetness.

The memories were about to over whelm me. "Why can't we just drop the subject and-"

"And what? If I'm not alive to you, then what'll we do? Annabeth, how do you KNOW that I'm dead?"

"Percy," I cautioned him that I was about to shut him up the hard way.

"How?"

"Because I killed you!"
